Zheng Deren was born in Shanghai in January 1923. In 1943, he was admitted to the "National Music College", the predecessor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and studied double bass with Russian professor She Fushufu. In 1946, he joined the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra's predecessor, the Orchestra of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, becoming the first Chinese double bass player in the orchestra, and later became the vocal principal until his retirement in 1991.

The translation of "light music" comes from him. In the Cultural Club at that time, which is now the Garden Hotel, his band performed for foreign experts every Saturday night and was very popular.
