IT Home News on July 20, STMicroelectronics today announced the launch of a FlightSense multi-zone ToF ranging sensor with a field of view of 90°.
According to reports, unlike some dedicated camera sensors, , the time-of-flight (ToF) sensor of the model VL53L7CX does not capture images , so it can protect the privacy of users.
VL53L7CX expands the field of view to 90° (diagonally), claims to be "almost equivalent to the level of a camera" , which enhances the perception of the surroundings of the scene, improves the performance of presence detection and system activation, for example, activating the screen or waking up ovens, coffee machines and other devices.
STMicroelectronics officially stated that the VL53L7CX can realize 3D scene imaging and simultaneously measure the distance to multiple objects in multiple areas . Thanks to its multi-zone ranging capability and motion indicator, the sensor can be used in areas such as person detection tracking, peeping behind warning, space occupancy detection, and storage/parking management.
The new sensor can also track full and empty trash cans, improving the performance of applications such as smart waste management systems. It can also improve the robot's floor sensing, cliff prediction, obstacle avoidance and small object detection performance. Other applications include keystone correction for projectors, and improved gesture recognition and extended hand tracking using the STGesture software package. In terms of hardware parameters of
, VL53L7CX has native 64 (8 x 8) sensing areas , which can measure the distance of multiple objects in each area, and the maximum measurement distance is 8750px. ST's patented histogram algorithm detects and measures multiple objects within the field of view with over 1500px smudge resistance.
In low power mode, the sensor consumes 5.4mW. In addition, the VL53L7CX can support an autonomous working mode, which allows the main control system to shut down the power supply and wake up the system only when a threshold is reached. Thresholds include distance to nearest object, signal rate, and detection of moving objects. The new sensor is pin and driver compatible with the previous generation device VL53L5CX.
VL53L7CX is now in production, using a 6.4mm x 3.0mm x 1.6mm micro-optical LGA16 package, is priced at $3.60 (IT Home Note: currently about 26 yuan) .
