It is reported that a total of 62 mainland films have applied for release in Taiwan this year. According to regulations, mainland films must apply for a lottery before they are released in Taiwan. The top ten can be released first in that year, and the rest can only be filled in the order of drawing.

The ten films selected this year are: "Mr. Monster", "Legal Companion", "Siberian Tiger", "Children of the Rivers and Lakes", "Amateur Agent", "Birds in the Suburbs", "Li Na", "Ye Shan Ming ", "Vanguard" and "The Boy Who Disappeared in the Old Street".

According to the current regulations, if the ten winning films are abandoned for some reason, they will be replaced in the order of lottery, so twenty-seven films were selected as substitutes.

The familiar "Chinatown Detective 3", "White Snake: Origin", "Zhu Xian 1", "Climber", "Chinese Captain", "Chinese Women's Volleyball", etc. are all on the shortlist.

Two of the ten films selected this year are films that have already been released in mainland China. The film "Children of the Rivers and Lakes" directed by director Jia Zhangke was released as early as September 21, 2018, and "Amateur Agents" has also been released. Six months have passed.

In fact, many Taiwanese audiences have learned about these two films from multiple channels, but because of Taiwanese film regulations, they cannot be introduced and played. Only through lottery selection can they have the chance to see outstanding mainland films in Taiwan’s theaters.

Mainland movies have always been subject to quota restrictions in Taiwan. At the beginning, Taiwan introduced 10 Mainland movies every year, and adopted the first-come-first-served principle. With the increase of film applications, the rules were adjusted to a lottery system.

However, the ten films still cannot meet the viewing needs of Taiwanese audiences, and a new rule has been added: "If mainland films win the Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, and American Oscars in the future, or get the best in Taiwan Golden Horse Awards For drama, best director and other awards, you can apply for release in Taiwan."

I don’t know that there is a quota limit for mainland films in Taiwan. What do you think?
