When dining outside, many people are used to scalding the bowls and chopsticks with boiling water, thinking that it can be disinfected. Does it really have such an effect? Such "burning" does not actually have a disinfection effect. It is more like a sense of ritual before a meal, and cannot achieve the purpose of disinfection and sterilization.

For tableware, high-temperature boiling is the most common disinfection method, and many germs can be killed by high-temperature disinfection. However, to achieve the effect, two conditions must be met: action temperature and action time.

Pour a pot of 100Ā°C boiling water into cold tableware, the temperature will drop rapidly and continue to drop, generally it can only reach 80-90Ā°C. To disinfect the tableware, you need to maintain the water temperature at 80Ā°C and soak for at least 10 minutes to kill some bacteria.

So what's the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and sterilizing?

cleaning: using physical or chemical methods to remove dirt, dust and organic matter on the surface of objects, such as washing hands and mopping the floor in daily life, all belong to the scope of cleaning.

Disinfection: Use physical or chemical methods to kill or remove pathogenic microorganisms on the transmission medium to make them harmless, such as wiping the skin with alcohol, boiling disinfection, etc., all belong to disinfection.

Sterilization: Use physical or chemical methods to kill or remove all microorganisms on the transmission medium, including the treatment of spores, such as high-pressure steam sterilization, low-temperature ethylene oxide sterilization, etc.

In hospitals, almost all diagnostic and therapeutic instruments must be sterilized, and a large part of them need to meet the sterilization requirements. We generally divide medical devices into three types: high, medium, and low-level dangerous goods, and carry out different cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization requirements according to different levels. People don't need to reach the "medical level" in their lives, just master the common sense of daily disinfection and cleaning.
