According to foreign media reports, the famous American film theorist and film historian David Bordwell passed away on February 29, local time, at the age of 77. He is well-known to Chinese movie fans for his book "Secrets of Hong Kong Movies" and his comment that "it's all over the top, it's all madness".
The original English name of "The Secret of Hong Kong Movies" is "Planet Hong Kong: Popular Cinema and the Art of Entertainment". When Bordwell evaluated Hong Kong movies, he used the expression "all too extravagant, too gratuitously wild", which was translated into "It's all excessive, it's all madness."
In addition to "Secrets of Hong Kong Film", Bordwell's "Film Poetics", "Looking at Film" and "Film Art" are also published in China. He also co-wrote "A History of World Cinema" with his wife, Christine Thompson.
