On January 13th, Tan Zhuo's first solo exhibition "No Present" was exhibited at Beijing Song Art Center. More than 20 new works showed a profound insight into life and technology, the past and future, and individual existence. In the conversation between Beijing Youth Daily reporter and Tan Zhuo, we got a glimpse of her creative philosophy.
The Charm of "No Present Time"
's new exhibition is called "No Present Time". To the outside world, this may be a "homophonic meme", but Tan Zhuo said that it means literally - not the present time, it comes from one of Deleuze's Philosophical point of view, "Look at the past from the future from another perspective and appreciate the changes in dimensions." The work is full of futuristic feeling, thinking and questioning the direction of future technology and life. Tan Zhuo said frankly that this work has ideas that can be communicated and discussed with everyone, and he hopes that through the changes in time and space, everyone can better pay attention to some issues.
Tan Zhuo's work "Revelation" was exhibited at the 2022 Beijing Art Biennale. This is an installation art work presented by "Digital Man" Tan Zhuo. Many works in this "Unpresent" also started from this , but the change is from Tan Zhuo’s own image to a faceless virtual character generated by AI.
This is another extension of the "Digital Human IP" creation. The creation is inspired by Grosz's philosophical point of view - the body without organs. Her original intention is to remove the clear identification of the individual and present a more materialistic, but at the same time Changes circulate in individuals. Tan Zhuo expressed that he wanted to express the appearance of all living beings through this form, "It is both me and every individual."
She is not bound
The more than 20 new works in this exhibition have very special numbers, which are interpreted by a long series of numbers. When talking about this, Tan Zhuo admitted that it was a digital combination formed by data and the size of the work. This creation presents abstract works, so not only are the names of the works open, but these works also have no borders. “I don’t want to limit it with something too specific,” Tan Zhuo said, “just like my character. "Similarly, I don't like too many constraints."
This kind of freedom and spontaneity is also reflected in the choice of solo exhibition venues and the presentation style of his works. She chose to hold the exhibition at the Song Art Center this time because she was impressed by the spacious and open space. The 800 square meters of art space completely matched the aura expressed by the entire exhibition. In this space, the traditional wall-mounting method is not used, but all are presented in acrylic. Even though the metal-style works give people a heavy and hard feeling, these works look very light and transparent from a distance. By extending two-dimensional plane lines into real space,
allows visitors to immerse themselves in it, as if they are also in the context of creation, wandering to their heart's content and feeling the infinite possibilities conveyed by the work.
In the eyes of curator Zhu Zhu, Tan Zhuo has "infinite possibilities". He said: "More important than camera position and viewpoint, subject matter and concept, all outstanding works are based on the understanding of human nature and the collective human situation. , for example, people play multiple roles throughout their lives, and the self is full of uncertainty and fluidity. Art brings more autonomy with its individual creation attributes."
The dissolving identity mark
in "not present" Tan Zhuo has made many artistic creations before, such as "Revelation" in the Beijing Art Biennale, and used creation to practice the artist's ideals. At the same time, she also served as the artistic innovation promotion ambassador and the initiator of the artistic innovation unit of the International Film Festival.
Tan Zhuo is best known to the public as an actress. She has portrayed many impressive characters and has been recognized and understood by the audience on both large and small screens. Therefore, when we get to know her again as an artist, the word "cross-border" is inevitable when we evaluate her. But she thinks this is just the outside world's perception of her, and she is more concerned about her "flowing self."
"I care about what interests me, what I don't like, what I want to do, my own ideas are important. The external form doesn't matter, even if I want to be a chef one day, just becoming a good chef is enough ." Various identities are the broadening of her self-context and her attempt to explore her personal world from the outside world.
When a person takes the initiative to take off her title, her identity also disappears. She can freely create in any role, awakening the surging vitality in the same person under different identities.
Satisfy yourself first
Art is always the same, and his experience as an actor has undoubtedly had an impact on Tan Zhuo's artistic creation. She said that both are creations. The actor's secondary creation needs to make the character realistic and convincing to the audience; while the creation of the work requires establishing it in his own language. Tan Zhuo said that this work incorporates her experience as an actor. For example, this work called "no.6212974637" is like a "framer" three-dimensional image of a camera lens. Some of the core art in it also uses It is presented in more dramatic language and pictures, which are very similar to the scenes in a movie.
Talking about the experience of creation, Tan Zhuo believes that he must have requirements for himself, and he needs to present his works stably so that everyone can see the vitality of an artist's creation; at the same time, he must also try his best to put the ideas in his mind into practice, "From the idea to the presentation of the work, When you understand the development and changes of the process and see the finished product, you will re-examine your own perceptions. These behaviors are particularly necessary."
This is Tan Zhuo’s first solo exhibition, and it is also a complete display of her diverse identities. Unlike the previous separate section, this time there are only two previous installations and the others are new works. "The time is very tight and the workload is not small. Although planning this kind of comprehensive exhibition is more tiring, the final effect is still satisfactory."
It is reported that the exhibition will last until February 24.
