"Twinkle Twinkle Star" is the most special movie in the 2024 New Year's Day release.
As the movie of the same name of the TV series "Twinkle, Twinkle" (hereinafter referred to as "Twinkle"), "Twinkle" has received more than 250 million pre-sales. As of the time of publication, it has sold a total of 617 million. The box office ranked first on New Year's Day. Such achievements as
have aroused endless curiosity among many viewers who do not know much about "Yi Flash". This is a big challenge for "Flash", and it has indeed caused some controversy, such as the overall arrangement of the film's rhythm, and whether the linkage between the story and the drama version is weak, etc. On the one hand, it carries the expectations of countless drama fans, and on the other hand, it also provides a story that is independent and complete enough for all viewers who enter the cinema.
Two days before the movie was released, poisonous eyes met with directors Chen Xiaoming and Zhang Pan, and talked about the creative process of "A Flash" and how the story of "Zhang Wansen" and "Lin Beixing" will be continued in the movie. . In terms of drama-film linkage, "Twinkle" gives a new idea: rather than telling the drama version repeatedly or completely creating a new story, it may be more important to find the most critical connection point between the two. .
The sentence at the end of the film is this "connection point": in the "Flash Universe", every secret love that is waiting for alone will be echoed in another time and space. More importantly, no matter which time and space the story of "Flash" takes place, it can only belong to Zhang Wansen and Lin Beixing.
The following is the transcript of the conversation between Poisonous Eyes and directors Chen Xiaoming and Zhang Pan:
Challenges under double pressure
Poisonous Eyes: From the first time you shot a long series to the first time you make a movie, what is the difference in your experience?
Chapter Pan: After the drama was aired in 2022, I received some good feedback, and I was actually quite happy at the time. After I decided to make a movie version, I was very looking forward to it and excited at first, but soon I started to feel a lot of pressure. Because it cannot live up to the expectations of fans of the drama for such a long time, and at the same time, the film must exist independently and completely in the market. This is a double pressure.
poisonous eyes: What about the specific operation process? What new challenges did you encounter while making the film this time?
Zhang Pan: is mainly about the amount of information. Because the overall volume of the play is very large, I never felt the pressure of length, and the space is relatively large. But when we were filming this movie, from the time the script came out, to the preliminary preparations, and then to the shooting process, many departments gave us feedback that the size of the current script must have taken more than three hours to shoot.
was under a lot of pressure at that time, and then I kept sorting out the script and found that there was actually nothing that could be deleted from the script. Because the overall structure of this story is tightly integrated, there is indeed no room for deletion, but the pressure of time is indeed there, so we have to ensure that the amount of information in a single line and a single shot is maximized in order to keep what we want. of everything.
Chen Xiaoming: is right, because the first half of the story is all foreshadowing, and when it starts to reverse later, it all corresponds to each previous paragraph, so there is nothing to delete, we can only try to make the unit time and The information density per unit lens is higher.
poisonous eyes: With the preparation in the previous hour, are you worried about "dissuading" the audience? In addition, given the limited length of the movie, are you worried that the emotional intensity of the two people will be weaker than what is shown in the series, thus affecting the viewing experience of "non-drama fans"?
Chapter Pan: We have also considered this issue with , because no matter whether there is a drama version or not, it must be an independent story in the film market, so we have never thought of making it a "only people who have watched the drama" can watch it It is quite irresponsible to put this story on the market like this.
Therefore, in terms of structural arrangement, we still consider structural issues as an independent, complete, and new movie.
Chen Xiaoming: When the audience enters this story, they watch two seemingly strangers and unfamiliar people get to know each other bit by bit, rather than the two of them falling in love intensely from the beginning. So I think there should be no obstacles for non-drama fans.
Poisonous Eyes: In each subsequent flashback, were the stories of the same scene from different perspectives shot at the same time?
Chen Xiaoming: The pairs were shot at the same time. In fact, this part was the most difficult. Because in the first half, the emotions of the two people have to be hidden, but when the plot reverses later, the same scene is repeated. In other words, the same performance method needs to be true in both situations, so we need to find a balance point.
Poisonous Eyes: Let’s talk about the fluorescent sea scene. What happened during the filming? What is the function of that scene?
Chen Xiaoming: The scene in was shot at the beach for a whole night, because the water started to rise as we were filming, so we had to keep moving.
We wanted the atmosphere of the scene to be dreamy and romantic, and use this atmosphere to wrap up the complex emotions of the two people. The filming was also taken from the back. I don’t know if you have noticed that from the beginning to the end, the camera does not show the faces of Zhang Wansen and Lin Beixing. It seems that both of them are hiding something.
In many scenes, including this scene, we did not use music to enhance the atmosphere like we do in dramas. This is also part of subtraction. Try to use the environment to drive the atmosphere. At several important emotional points, we will use the sound of the waves to let the waves push the emotion to a higher position.
poisonous eyes: After the whole shooting, what was the most difficult part?
Chen Xiaoming: It seems that the most difficult part of is the big scenes, because they involve a lot of group performances and need to be scheduled. Everything else is fine, because we have a good rapport with the two actors and have a high tacit understanding, and they both know Zhang Wansen and Lin Beixing very well, and they know who they are.
The process of making up for regrets
Poisonous Eyes: The film still retains some scenes that fans of the drama will feel emotional about when they see it, such as "Zhang Wansen, it's snowing".
Chen Xiaoming: When many viewers watch the drama, after the plot advances to that point, they will feel that the sentence "Zhang Wansen, it's snowing" represents a deep regret, and the emotions about snow are also very sad. Yes, the beginning and end of episode 24 have a very sad tone.
Although the movie is a new story and is not told continuously, we still want to include this plot. At the same time, we also hope that "Zhang Wansen, it's snowing" has a completely different emotion in the film, which can be regarded as a regretful compensation.
Poisonous Eyes: Although the ending seems to be my preference, I feel that the tone of the entire film and the way it is told have a bit of sadness in it. Why is it arranged this way?
Chapter 2: Before the story started to reverse, although it seemed quite relaxed on the surface, in fact, I could vaguely feel that there were some undercurrents. The tone of this movie still has some sad undertones, but as you said, of course it still depends on personal interpretation, but everyone may feel that the ending is relatively happy.
Poisonous Eyes: Like the drama version, the ending of the movie also tends to be open-ended, so your original intention is to leave it to everyone’s interpretation, right? Is there possibly a "standard answer" to this ending?
Zhangpan: does not exist. I still hope to leave some room for everyone’s imagination, which may feel better.
Poisonous Eyes: The "Sea of Time and Space Bookstore" in the movie also appears in the play. Many people will speculate that the bookstore is an important "time and space switch", but it does not seem to be reflected in the movie. What is the function of the bookstore in this story?
Chapter Pan: We deliberately arranged the environment of the bookstore and the role of the bookstore owner "Lao Xie" played by Teacher Tian Zhuangzhuang.Because Zhang Wansen and Lin Beixing are time travelers, they do not belong to this time and space, so it is difficult for them to integrate into the environment here and communicate with the people around them.
Due to space reasons, we have weakened some of the families of the two people, but especially for Zhang Wansen, he needs someone to talk to who can bring him warmth and comfort. Therefore, the role of Lao Xie cannot even be replaced by Maizi.
Poison Eyes: I feel that this story is simpler than the drama version. It just revolves around the relationship between Zhang Wansen and Lin Beixing.
Chen Xiaoming: Yes, we are all subtracting from the script, and all the plots are for the advancement of the two people's emotions. Of course, the final degree of completion of the film is basically the same as the script, with only a few scenes being deleted.
Poisonous Eyes: Are there any details in the movie that the audience may overlook when watching the movie?
Chen Xiaoming: There are some very small points in . For example, the posters in the ticketing center are different in different time and space, and some distinctions will be made; and at the beginning, when Zhang Wansen came out of the college entrance examination examination room, someone outside said: " Another one comes out." In fact, the last person who came out was Lin Beixing, who also traveled to the same time and space; the last moonwalk segment ended with Lin Beixing picking the star with his hands, which actually made up for her not buying the star. regret.
Chapter Pan: These are subtle details, but even if you are not aware of them, they will not affect your understanding of the story. In my opinion, the more important thing is to hope that the audience can understand the emotion we want to convey, which is the sentence at the end of the story: every secret love waiting alone will be echoed in another time and space.
Poisonous Eyes: It feels like the drama has become a parallel time and space in the movie. Putting aside the easter eggs, this sentence is actually a summary of the two people in that time and space in the drama, right?
Chapter Pan: One thing we have always been very clear about is that although we chose a brand new story and perspective in the movie, the characters, personalities and emotions between Zhang Wansen and Lin Beixing cannot be changed at all. , otherwise this movie would have no meaning.
Of course, when we were about to start making the movie, some people said, why not just continue the drama version and make up for all the regrets in it. That would break the mood of the show itself as a complete story.
But when we are working on new stories, we still have the mission to make up for some regrets in the show.
movie expands the scope of the concept of parallel time and space in the play, and creates a concept similar to the "whole universe". This concept includes not only the time and space in the play, but also includes all the parallel universes that we have not seen, Zhang Wansen and Lin Beixing’s story. I hope this sentence and this story can bring some comfort to new and old viewers.
