At the age of 13, he became a monk for the first time, studied teachings, and practiced hard. In 1949, he joined the army and started his military career until he became a monk again in 1960!
He recalled the past and discovered that Guanyin Bodhisattva had manifested for him 5 times. Everyone sighed: It was amazing!
He is the founder of Dharma Gushan in Taiwan, a Buddhist monk- Shengyan Master !

13-year-old monk
retired after being a soldier and retired
On January 22, 1931, Master Sheng Yan was born in Xiaoniang Port in front of Langshan Mountain in Nantong, Jiangsu. He is the youngest child in the family, with 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
His mother was 42 years old when he was born, so he grew up in sickness. Thanks to his mother, a devout disciple of the Buddha, prayed to Avalokitesvara every day. With the blessing of Avalokitesvara, he was able to grow up safely! When
13 years old, the abbot of Guangjiao Temple in Langshan asked a layman named Dai to find a novice in Jiangnan. He gave his birthday abbot Dai Xu to ask him to show him the birthplace of the family.
So, by coincidence, he became a monk! After
became a monk, he studied intensively and submerged in teachings. In 1947, he went to the Buddhist College of Jing'an Temple in Shanghai and became a student monk.
thought that he would live a life of pure and penance in the future, who would have said that in 1949, his life changed drastically!
In 1949, he enlisted in the army, followed the army to Taiwan, and began his military career. Life in the army is hard, but he still prays to the Buddha every holiday.
Time flies. In January 1960, he was officially discharged from the army. This period of military career surpassed the number of years of the mage boy monk, but in his heart he always believed that he was a monk.
After being discharged from the army, Master Shengyan thought about the future, and under the inspiration of the monk Lingyuan, he determined to become a monk again. This time he became a monk, and the old man Yizhi Lang Dongchu was the shaman, and he gave the school name "Huikong Shengyan".

z23Master Shengyan once recalled that since childhood, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has always blessed himself in the dark:
Since I was young, I have never been bathed in the grace of Avalokitesvara.
I was born sick and weak. My mother believed in Guanyin so that I could not die. This is the first manifestation of Guanyin Bodhisattva for me.
I was very stupid when I was a teenager. According to my mother, I didn’t speak until 6 years old, and I didn’t go to school until 9 years old.
When I was 13 years old, I was just a fourth-grade pupil. After I became a monk, the first story Master told me was about Zen Master Yongming Yanshou in the Song Dynasty asking for wisdom.
Zen Master Yongming Yanshou practised the "Huahua Repentance" for 21 days. In his dream, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva poured nectar into his mouth, and he was able to argue without hindrance. Later, the book "Zongjinglu" became an immortal work in the history of Buddhism.
My master taught me to worship at least 200 Guanshiyin Bodhisattva every morning and evening. After worshiping for more than half a year, I visualized as I worshiped: Guanshiyin Bodhisattva held Yangzhi in his hand and sprinkled it on my head with cool and clean water with nectar.
In this way, a thick book of "Zen Men Day Chanting", I even learned by heart within a few months, even I was surprised and surprised.
This is the second manifestation of Guanyin Bodhisattva!
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's third manifestation was when I arrived in Shanghai.
At that time, I learned that there was a Buddhist academy. I asked the teacher to send me to school, but the teacher said that I was too poor and would not pass the exam. Second, I couldn't understand it even if I went there.
Disappointed, I got up every night to worship Guanshiyin Bodhisattva. It was unexpectedly joyful that he actually got into the Buddhist academy as a transfer student because of the harmony of fate.
The fourth manifestation of Guanyin Bodhisattva was in the spring of 1949.
When I arrived in Taiwan, I was in very poor health. Some initiates worried that I would be dragged to death by the sick body in less than three months.
But in my heart, I have never left Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. I often use the time of walking and morning exercises to meditate on Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, so I have been under the care of the bodhisattva.
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's fifth manifestation was after I became a monk again. I beg the Bodhisattva to give me a dojo for meditation.
At that time, I prayed "Great Compassion Repentance" every day and recited the holy name of Guanyin. There will be a few friends who think that this wish is destined to fail.
In Taiwan at that time, even if the elders came to the table, it was not easy to ask for an ideal place for hard work. Besides, I was so sparsely born that I couldn't find people to fund the food, and I couldn't find opportunities for retreat.
But I did not expect that due to the accidental introduction of Master Haolin and the assistance of Master Wuyi, I got to know two nuns in Meinong Town, Kaohsiung Mountain. Therefore, it takes more than six years to live in Chaoyuan Temple.
Because of my own experience as mentioned above, I will be responsive to Avalokitesvara’s requests. It is unquestionable and grateful.

specifically implements the three major educations of graduate school, generalization, and major care, as a base for realizing the concept of "improving the quality of people and building a pure land on earth". In 2005, the first phase of the construction project of the park was completed, and the grand opening ceremony was held.
As early as the end of 2007, when Jet Li paid a visit to Master Sheng Yan, Sheng Yan first disclosed that he was suffering from kidney disease.
At 4 pm on February 3, 2009, Master Sheng Yan passed away at the age of 78.
He wrote his will before his death: Behind me, no obituaries, no confession, no tombs, no towers, no monuments, no images, no picking up strong sons. One to three elders are invited to preside over the ceremonies of sealing the coffin, saying goodbye, tupi, and planting burial. Make sure to use simplicity as solemnity, and don’t waste extravagance. Only a piece of "death for happiness" written by the calligrapher is hung in the hall for encouragement; the resignation flower and the elegiac couplet only read "Nanwu Amitabha Buddha" and join the lotus state. Net margin.
Master Shengyan used Buddhism to escape the sufferings of the world and planted the seeds of Buddhism in the hearts of countless people!
