6 dead, 2 injured as bus plunges into river from 73-meter bridge in Spain

On December 24, 2022, in Galicia, northwestern Spain, a bus fell into a river from a bridge 240 feet (about 73 meters) high while crossing a bridge, killing 6 people and injuring 2 others. According to British media reports on December 25, 2022, the tragedy occurred on Saturday (December 24, 2022) at around 9:30 pm, near the Portuguese border. The local La Voz de Galicia newspaper said the bus was carrying passengers to Monterroso in central Galicia.

The bus suddenly fell from the bridge 240 feet (about 73 meters) into the river. Emergency services said there were eight people in the vehicle. Initially, two bodies were found first, and two others, including the driver, were rescued and taken to hospital.

Rescue operations had to be suspended overnight due to bad weather and rain, but resumed this morning. A spokesman for the National Guard in Pontevedra, about 30 kilometers from the crash site, said the complex where the car crashed made access difficult.

Spain's National Guard later said two more bodies had been found earlier today. The woman's body has been recovered, but the man's body has not yet been recovered. Now, all 6 dead have been found. On Twitter, emergency services posted a photo of the vehicle in turbulent water.

The National Guard also said the bus driver's alcohol test was normal. The cause of the accident was not yet known, but bad weather could have played a role, they added. Galicia regional official Alfonso Rueda said: "We don't know the exact cause, but the weather conditions that night were really bad."
