The film is written and directed by Dapeng, based on Ma Boyong 's novel of the same name. Zhang Chiyu serves as script consultant, Shen Yuyue and Dai Si'ao serve as screenwriters, and Li Yaping serves as chief producer.

The film tells the story of Li Shande, a minor official during the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty. He accidentally received a task to crush "Li" mountains: to transport fresh lychees from Lingnan to Chang'an, thousands of miles away, within a limited time... .How should he respond?
