Shen Wei, the internationally renowned Hunan-born Chinese dance master, announced that he will launch a five-city nationwide tour in September with his classic works "Ladder to Heaven" and "Sheng Xi". The first stop is scheduled for September 21st to 22nd at the Grand Theater of Changsha Meixi Lake International Culture and Art Center, bringing the audience a contemporary dance feast that combines Eastern and Western aesthetics.
Shen Wei, as a famous choreographer, dancer, painter and visual artist, was influenced by traditional Chinese opera since childhood and later became one of the pioneers of Chinese modern dance. He has made great achievements in the international dance world. He has been invited to the world's top theaters and art festivals many times, and has won many international awards including the "Nijinsky Award" and the MacArthur "Genius Grant". The "Natural Body Development Method" founded by Shen Wei has become an innovative model in the field of dance technology.
The revival of "Ladder to Heaven" and "Sheng Xi" are milestone works in Shen Wei's artistic career, premiering in 1999 and 2000 respectively. These two works not only established Shen Wei's unique dance style, but also became classics among classics with their profound artistic connotations and aesthetic values that transcend time and space.
"Shengxi" is inspired by Laozi's "Great Sound Xisheng, the elephant is invisible" in Laozi's "Tao Te Ching". Through minimalist stage design and ethereal music, it shows the dialogue between life and death, soul and consciousness, and is popular among Western audiences. The media praised it as "a manifestation of China's nobility, moderation and elegance". "Ladder to Heaven" draws on the artistic elements of Belgian surrealist painters. It uses a pure white stage and a huge staircase as the background to show dancers standing still and moving like sculptures, and finally blending into the end of the "Ladder to Heaven", symbolizing the backward flow of consciousness.
This tour project is jointly produced and produced by Beijing Poly Theater Management Co., Ltd., Shen Wei Dance Art, and Beijing Haosi International Culture and Arts Co., Ltd. Shen Wei will team up with top dancers from the United States, France and China to comprehensively upgrade the stage design, scenery, costumes and lighting, presenting every detail with a "high-end" level. Each tour stop will be customized based on the actual conditions of the theater and stage to ensure that each performance can achieve the same exquisite effect as the premiere.
