In the movie " Sweeping Gangs·Never Give Up " directed by Wubai, Yu Ailei plays Duan Yi, the executive deputy director of the Public Security Bureau. In the eyes of outsiders, this character has strong work ability and low-key behavior, but under the eyes of criminal policeman Li Nanbei ( Xiaoyang ) During the investigation to eradicate gangsters, it was discovered that Duan Yi, who is from the same school as himself, is the protective umbrella of the gangster forces.
Yu Ailei's version of the poster of "Crackdown on Crime and Never Give Up".
In an interview with the Beijing News, Yu Ailei reviewed the mental journey of why the character Duan Yi was corrupted, down to every detail and line. This is what he must do in filming over the years, to explore each character to its limit. He especially misses the state of filming 20 years ago. The crew would leave enough time for the actors to do their homework. Nowadays, the industry is developing too fast, and sometimes things are in a hurry. The visible regret will make him particularly painful on the spot. "My current ideal situation is to shoot one movie a year, or one movie for half a year, and shoot slowly." Yu Ailei said very seriously.
[Dialogue]
The ideal situation is to shoot one movie a year, or one movie for half a year.
The director of "Sweeping Gangs Never Give Up" Wu Bai had previously filmed the drama " Sweeping Gangs Storm ". He watched it at the time After reviewing a large amount of file information and interviewing relevant figures, it was discovered that some gangster cadres are actually very similar to Duan Yi. They are very low-key, hide deeply, and maintain dual identities secretly. In Yu Ailei's view, the role of Duan Yi is very different from the villains he has played before. He used a lot of details including clothing and lines to review the psychological process of why this character was corrupted.
Duan Yi doesn’t care about material things, what he wants is power
Beijing News: Duan Yi wears glasses and short hair in the film. Is this designed by the styling teacher or is it his own idea?
Yu Ailei: We actually overturned a lot of looks. The role of Duan Yi originally set by the styling teacher was very fashionable and handsome, with many nice clothes, but I think those things would make people feel that Duan Yi is materialistic. I think no. He has so many things to deal with at work and a lot of social interactions in the society. He is well-rounded and takes care of his family. He always takes two days a week to take care of his master. He also has to go for a night run in the middle of the night. You think he should How self-disciplined is it? Such a person does not care about material things. If you put some more exquisite clothes on him, this person will suddenly change his taste.
Beijing News: He doesn’t care about material things, what does he care about?
Yu Ailei: Power, the last thing he wants is power. Although he is only a middle-level cadre, even the mayor listens to him. He is the real power controller. What he wants is power.
In "Sweep the Crime·Never Give Up", Duan Yi, played by Yu Ailei, is a villain who doesn't care about material things and will do whatever it takes to achieve his goals.
Beijing News: I believe that you did not play the role of Duan Yi just as a villain. How did this character get corrupted step by step? How did you find the rationality of his behavior and how did you create a biography for him?
Yu Ailei: Duan Yi is a person who will do whatever it takes to achieve the goal. He believes that as long as the goal is achieved, the final result will be good. So the reason why I gave him a setting that was corrupted may even be because the master only appeared once in the film. One master brought out two police officers with extremely strong working ability, so this master must be good, but how could the master do it? To reach this point, alone in a nursing home, was he hurt? Did Duan Yi try hard to get some benefits for his master, but in the end he failed to achieve the desired results, so he simply did something extraordinary and ended up hurting ordinary people. This matter must be suppressed. Go down, go deeper and deeper, there is no turning back. I remember that we finally decided on a dialogue, and Li Nanbei asked: I just want to ask you why? The implication is that you don’t have much money, so this is all you can do, why are you? But my answer is: don’t talk about some things.Because once he takes that step, he doesn't want to look back. As a cadre within the system, he knows exactly what he will face in the end.
Stills from "Crackdown on Gangsters and Never Give Up". Duan Yi takes care of his master in the nursing home.
Beijing News: At the end, from Duan Yi’s speech at the birthday banquet to when he came out to face Li Nanbei, what was his mental journey like?
Yu Ailei: When Duan Yi said those words to all his relatives and friends at the birthday banquet, he already meant to leave a last message. He repeatedly stressed that what happened to my father and what happened to him when he came to Kuizhou meant your wealth and status today. Who gave them all? If something happens to me, you will take good care of my family, but he still feels uneasy. The moment he saw Li Nanbei, he no longer had any unrealistic illusions. His energy and energy were drained from his entire body. In fact, he had been sentenced. With his position as the Executive Deputy Director of the Public Security Bureau, , is very familiar with criminal law in his mind. He has committed many crimes, and there are some crimes that he cannot escape at all. He must accept them.
Beijing News: What he is most worried about is his daughter.
Yu Ailei: I remember sitting on that chair, not knowing what to say. I held it in for a long time and actually said one thing: help me take care of my daughter. After filming this scene, I also talked with a friend from the local political and legal committee who participated in the co-production. He said, Brother Lei, I got goosebumps when you said that. I said, why? He said, we arrested many people just like this (we wanted to entrust someone to take care of their families).
My understanding is this, if you are poor in the busy city, no one cares about you, but if you are rich in the mountains, you have distant relatives. When you are proud of your officialdom, everything works very well and you are surrounded by good people. But once something goes wrong, everyone will step on you. The most terrifying thing is that the child does not understand anything. At this age, everything is beautiful, but suddenly one day the whole family collapsed. The insults and bullying she suffered at school are beyond your control. At that moment, I think this is what Duan Yi was thinking. At the end, the director deliberately asked Duan Yi's daughter to dance in the background. I saw it was so bad and the audience was so heartbroken.
Who can spot the bad people in life?
Beijing News: It is said that during the filming stage, the entire crew was still creating and revising together?
Yu Ailei: We pinched the screenwriter on set every day until he collapsed. After finishing work, we arranged to go to a conference to chat in the evening. The director used an electric mosquito swatter to swat the mosquitoes, but in fact he was poking at the screenwriter, but there was no electricity. (implying to the screenwriter) What? It hasn’t been written yet. This room of writers is dying of grief.
Beijing News: You basically do literary scenes in the film. Compared to other actors, you have a lot of fighting scenes. Is it easier to shoot, or is it another kind of tiredness?
Yu Ailei: You can think about it from another perspective. There will always be times when you need to do physical work, such as moving. If it is like this every day, can you accept it? I was beaten from morning to night for 20 days, every day from the moment I opened my eyes. I was so tired that I almost vomited blood. Another way is to rush to finish a manuscript. Even if you rush to finish it for a week, it is another kind of torture. In fact, they all burn different energies, and no one is easier than anyone else.
Beijing News: In the film, you have many interesting interactions with Li Nanbei, played by Xiao Yang. Is there any scene that impressed you deeply?
Yu Ailei: The scene where a bunch of kids playing basketball chased us, I didn’t want that scene at the time, because I acted too funny. After the scene, I kept panting and my voice changed. In fact, my heart rate is not very good. If I run for a long time, my heart rate will jump from the normal 60 to 150. In fact, I can explain it because Duan Yi sits in an office for a long time, unlike Li Nanbei who works on the front line every day.
Beijing News: There is a scene where Duan Yi takes Li Nanbei to a wine shop. At first the audience sees Li Nanbei drinking, but in the end they see Duan Yi vomiting. Does this scene have any meaning?
Yu Ailei: From the perspective of the audience, they will feel that Duan Yi is a bad guy in the later stage, and they will feel that Duan Yi wants to lure Li Nanbei into the water in this scene, but if you think about it carefully, if you want to lure him into the water, why would you drink too much? Duan Yi Yi really wanted to help him, it was quite simple. Duan Yi also wanted Li Nanbei to naturally realize that there are some things that you can't solve through formal channels, so what can you do with relationships, and Duan Yi is the one to do it. This is because the two people have different worldviews and value orientations. In some details, we have thought about how to make the audience feel through actions.
Beijing News: The role of Duan Yi is quite hidden in the film, whereas the villain you played previously told the audience his identity from the beginning.
Yu Ailei: is actually not the case, because the audience has a God’s perspective. Many people think that Yuan Zai, who I played in "The Twelve Hours of Chang'an", is a villain. If you are not allowed to see his voice from God's perspective, is he a villain? He is just a bit petty and greedy, so he is not a villain. This is why audiences often ignore their own perspective of God when watching movies and TV series, but who can see the bad guys in life?
In Yu Ailei's opinion, Yuan Zai, whom he played in "The Twelve Hours of Chang'an", "is just a bit narrow-minded and greedy, so he can't be considered a villain."
Li Nanbei and I are the same in life. We don’t want to clap when the leader says anything.
Beijing News: There is a meeting scene in the film. Li Nanbei said, don’t clap when the leader says anything. In reality, are you the kind of person who takes the lead in applauding?
Yu Ailei: I am the same as Li Nanbei in life, and I find it annoying. Why do I always have to applaud? It’s endless. Let’s finish it quickly. I remember that Lao Xiao (Xiao Yang) added the phrase "Don't applaud whatever the leader says" himself, and it is indeed everyone's true thought.
Beijing News: You said before that the ideal situation is to spend half of the year filming and half the time living. Has this ideal state been achieved now?
Yu Ailei: My current ideal situation is to shoot one movie a year, or one movie for half a year, slowly. We are developing too fast. I still miss the slow shooting 20 years ago. Everyone had enough time to do all kinds of homework and do their best to present the best results to the audience. Nowadays, the industry is developing too fast. Everything is launched as soon as possible, which sometimes makes me a little rushed. I clearly know that if I spend more time, I will do better, because this kind of regret that is visible to the naked eye and the regret that I feel afterward are two kinds of regrets. The first is A regret that was particularly painful at the scene.
In "Sweep the Crime·Never Give Up", Yu Ailei and Xiao Yang, who plays Li Nanbei, have a lot of exciting scenes opposite each other.
Beijing News: How much time do you spend filming in a year now?
Yu Ailei: spends most of the time shooting. I also like most of the roles. At least I take them when I think it is possible to play some different roles. For the rest, if I can squeeze out time, I will go abroad to visit, see the scenery, and play games. This can make me happy. Very happy. Maybe this year will be better, I just had a holiday.
Beijing News: You used to like to play various extreme sports. Do you play them more now?
Yu Ailei: I don’t dare to play now. It takes time, and I don’t dare to play when I have a project on my hands. I am afraid that something will happen, and if it is dangerous, it will drag down the entire project.
