The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway is a high-speed railway connecting Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, and Bandung, the fourth largest city. It is the first overseas construction project of China's high-speed railway with a full system, all factors, and a whole industry chain. In October 2023, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway will be officially opened for operation. The travel time between Jakarta and Bandung has been shortened from more than 3 hours to 40 minutes, providing people along the line with a safe, green, efficient and comfortable travel method, which is favored by the public. .
The opening and operation of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway cannot be separated from the hard work and silent dedication of railway builders. On the eve of this year's May 4th Youth Day, the youth commando team of the Indonesian Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway Project Department of China Railway Fourth Bureau won the 28th China Youth May 4th Medal and accepted an exclusive interview with a reporter from the Global Information Broadcasting Station.
Yu Baikun once served as the deputy director of the engineering department of the Bandung beam making yard in the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project. He said that during the construction of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, it is necessary to overcome various difficulties brought to life and work by Indonesia's hot and humid climate.
Yu Baikun at the construction site
Yu Baikun: I remember one time during a beam erection task, a thunderstorm suddenly started, and the beam erection work was suspended. But at that time (whether it was the general commander of the cross-road girder erection, the employees responsible for erecting the girder, the staff directing traffic, and the local Indonesian employees, they all stayed at their posts with us at the scene, waiting for the rain to stop. By this time everyone was wet. Because of the emphasis on the process of erecting cross-road beams, safety assurance measures were very sufficient and in place. Finally, the owner of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway Project (kcic) awarded us a trophy for the zero accident of 1,066 box beams.

Yu Baikun: Our site is built in the middle of the original residential area, and the exchanges with the locals are still very close. Every time we passed by, the locals were so welcoming and friendly. For example, I went shopping in a nearby supermarket and saw us. They were very enthusiastic. They were riding motorcycles and asked me if I wanted a ride. They sent me there directly. I felt very cordial and enthusiastic. When the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway was put into operation, most of the employees personally experienced the high-speed railway by riding in the local area. They also used common coins and water cups (for testing) to see the stability of the high-speed railway operation. It is not easy to experience the speed of China's high-speed rail in Indonesia.
Niu Yanxin once served as deputy manager of the second branch of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project and has worked in Indonesia for a total of 7 years. He said that in view of the engineering characteristics in Indonesia that are different from those in China, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway adopted innovative construction technologies adapted to local conditions during the construction process.
Niu Yanxin’s on-site docking of public facilities relocation plan
Niu Yanxin: For example, our China Railway Fourth Bureau No. 1 Company undertakes the Bandung section of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, which has specific geographical location, geological conditions, construction environment, labor efficiency and floor material supply. , all different from those in China. In this case, through on-site practice, research and summary, we have innovated a set of tooling and application combinations suitable for railway bridge construction in the specific environment of Southeast Asia. While ensuring construction quality, it effectively improves production efficiency, accelerates construction progress, reduces cost waste, and effectively improves project operation and management levels. For example, the bored pile construction technology is based on the volcanic ash accumulation layer summarized in the local geology and the lacustrine layer geology with a huge silt layer.

Niu Yanxin pointed out that Dekarur Station is the only one among the four stations on the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway that was constructed and built by a Chinese company. The exterior design of the station incorporates Indonesian cultural elements.
Niu Yanxin: The entire shape design of the Dekarur Station we participated in the construction combines the attributes of Indonesia’s maritime country. It adopts a wave-shaped design. The exterior facade uses aluminum plate curtain walls and glass curtain walls, which have a sparkling effect under natural light. The sparkling feeling reflects the beauty of winding water and nature.
Kang Xiaorui inspects the grounding system
As the youngest engineering technician in the Jakarta-Bandung High-speed Railway Project Department of China Railway Fourth Bureau, 28-year-old Kang Xiaorui said that participating in this project not only taught him a lot of knowledge and skills, but also broadened his horizons and increased his knowledge. I grew up quickly at work.

Kang Xiaorui: At that time, the project arranged for a mentor to lead an apprentice. The master taught me step by step how to move from theory to practice, which achieved a leap-forward improvement in professional ability. In four years, my personal professional ability has improved a lot. We have also made many Indonesian friends. They are very happy to get along with us and hope that we will build more projects for them. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail is an important link in the “One Belt, One Road” initiative and has received unanimous praise at home and abroad. I believe that China’s high-speed rail will one day travel to every corner of the world. I am honored to participate in the construction of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway. The team won the China Youth May 4th Medal, which makes me even more excited. What I learned (expertise) in school has been put into use, and I have also learned a lot on this platform. At the same time, he also received many honors.
Tao Lei explains measurement knowledge to new Indonesian employees at the Jakarta-Bandung High-speed Railway Branch II
Tao Lei has worked in the bridge work area of the Jakarta-Bandung High-speed Railway Project Department for nearly four years from June 2017 to January 2021.
Tao Lei: Especially in the early stage of the project (project implementation), the personnel are very nervous. The measurement frequency required by the design is very high and the tasks are relatively heavy. I am the only one responsible for the measurement work in the early stage of the project. Under the instructions of our leaders, we began to form a local measurement team to teach and lead local employees to perform measurement-related work. This not only trained local employees, but also allowed them to successfully complete related tasks. We formed an Indonesian surveying team of 12 people at that time and achieved very good results. Many college students later want to work here because they feel that we learn things very quickly and can learn advanced knowledge and skills in high-speed rail construction. This is also a very good resume for them to find employment after the project is over.
Tao Lei took a group photo with Indonesian students who completed their internship at the Jakarta-Bandung High-speed Railway Branch II.
Tao Lei: The entire Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project adopts Chinese technology and Chinese standards. After it is opened to traffic, it will be of great significance to Indonesia's local economy, including social development. It allows local people to experience first-hand the changes that the speeding up of high-speed rail has brought to society, increasing local employment opportunities, improving people's livelihood, and speeding up other infrastructure construction in Indonesia in the future. Our team was able to win the China Youth May 4th Medal. As a member of the team, I feel very honored. I will take this honor to show more energy in my future work and contribute my capabilities to national construction and the construction of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.
