[cnmo Technology] In a few months, in September 2024, Apple is expected to launch a new iPhone 16 series, bringing new features and improvements to the world’s most popular smartphone.

As the most basic version of the iphone 16 series and the most affordable of the four new iphone 16 versions, what changes will there be between the iphone 16 standard version and the iphone 15?

According to previous news, the price of iPhone 16 is expected to increase slightly, with a selling price of about US$800 (approximately RMB 5,800). The design will be slightly adjusted, and the rear cameras will be arranged in a vertical arrangement. In addition, the machine may be equipped with a faster chip, larger storage, two new physical buttons, and other improvements.
Appearance and size
The size and shape of iPhone 16 have not changed much. Just like the iPhone 15 before it, the new iPhone will have a 6.1-inch form factor and will likely feature a similar aluminum frame with slightly tapered edges and a matte glass finish on the back.

It is worth mentioning that the size of the bezels around the screen may be slightly reduced, but it is unlikely because Apple is more likely to retain the thinner bezels on the iPhone Pro models.
However, the shape of the camera module has indeed changed. Apple is switching to a new vertical camera arrangement on the iPhone 16. Apple has adopted this design in the past, and the last time it appeared was on the iPhone 12 series. But the reason for the change is purely practical and has to do with a new feature - spatial video. This new 3D video format looks stunning on Vision Pro and requires the camera lenses to be lined up in order for it to work.
Rumors also claim that all iPhone 16 models, including the base iPhone 16, will be equipped with an action button (replacing the silent switch) and a new "shoot button" for quickly launching the camera. The capture button works like the shutter button on your camera, so you only need one tap to focus, and a full press to take the photo.
The action buttons will be on the left side, above the volume keys. The capture button will be on the right side, below the power button. This is where Apple previously placed the millimeter wave antenna, and now Apple has moved it to the lower left corner, below the volume rocker.

The rest is almost the same. Of course, there are still USB-C ports on the iPhone 16, as well as IP68 water and dust resistance. In terms of color, the iPhone 16 is expected to come in six different color options, some of which are familiar but some of which are new, such as the purple version that is rumored to be in development.
For Apple, the iPhone 16 is expected to use the same 6.1-inch OLED screen, but there are rumors that Apple will use new microlens technology to increase brightness and reduce power consumption. But while these changes are nice to see, one display improvement people really want won't be available on iPhone 16. Or more specifically, the lack of 120hz promotion on non-pro iPhone models. According to all rumors, the iPhone 16 will continue to have a 60hz refresh rate, just like the iPhone 15. And its sliding effect is far less smooth than promotion. Rumors suggest that this coveted feature will eventually launch with regular iPhone 17 models in 2025 (if that’s any consolation).
performance and software
iPhone 16 is expected to come with a new, faster chipset.
iPhone 15 runs on the a16 bionic chip, while iPhone 16 is expected to be the first regular iPhone model to use a 3nm processor. This new chipset could be called Apple A18 (different from the A18 Pro chipset in the pro version).

So far, we only know that this new chipset will be mainly optimized for artificial intelligence. Apple missed out on AI last year, but it's fully invested in the technology, and we expect to hear the word "AI" a lot in the iPhone 16 series.
Speaking of artificial intelligence, iPhone 16 will also be equipped with 8GB RAM, which is higher than iPhone 15’s 6GB RAM.Most AI tasks seem to require additional memory, which is probably the number one reason for iPhone RAM upgrades. However, this also means that some artificial intelligence features may not be available on the older iPhone 15.
We don’t expect any changes to memory, though, with Apple offering 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of native storage.
The iPhone 16 may also use the same Snapdragon X70 modem as the iPhone 15. It's a very good solution, just not as advanced as the modem expected in the iPhone 16 Pro. The pro model will likely feature an x75 version, which features improved carrier aggregation and a sub-6ghz and millimeter-wave combo chip that takes up 25% less board space and consumes 20% less power.
camera
The iPhone 16 may look different with its new vertical camera system, but aside from spatial video, it may not be as exciting an upgrade over last year’s iPhone 15.
Last year, iPhone 15 was the first regular iPhone to use Apple’s 48MP main camera, which had significant upgrades in terms of details and low-light photography.

This year’s iPhone 16 does not seem to have much hardware changes: it is equipped with the same 48mp main camera, the same 12mp ultra-wide-angle camera, and no dedicated telephoto lens.
Of course, there will definitely be some software tweaks, but so far leaks and rumors haven't revealed much detail.
With AI, we do expect to see new editing features: smart resizing and smart moving of objects in photos are just some of the tricks Apple might borrow from Samsung and Google's AI playbook.
As for video quality, Space Video is likely to be a major upgrade. Although you can't really enjoy these 3D videos on your mobile phone, you can enjoy these 3D videos on ar/vr headsets such as Apple Vision Pro. While the results are stunning, not many people actually own such a headset yet, so it might be a while before the spatial video feature gets the recognition it deserves.
Battery life and charging
Because the iPhone 16 is roughly the same size and shape as the iPhone 15 that preceded it, there's no room for a larger battery.
However, there are also rumors that iPhone 16 may receive a slight upgrade.
iPhone 16 is expected to be equipped with a 3,561mah battery, which is a 6% increase from the 3,349mah battery capacity of iPhone 15. Interestingly, this regular iPhone 16 version will likely get the biggest battery upgrade of all iPhone 16 models (in fact, some models like the iPhone 16 Plus are getting smaller battery upgrades).
iphone 16 series battery details revealed
So far, this is the only thing we know about the battery of the new phone. Will adding 6% more battery improve real-world battery life? It's possible, but those battery gains likely won't be huge.
Interestingly, we are likely to see changes to charging speeds, the first from Apple in years.
There are rumors that the new iPhone may be equipped with 40w fast wired charging (currently 20w), and 20w fast magsafe wireless charging (currently 15w).
But it’s far from certain, and given what we know about Apple’s conservative approach to fast charging, we doubt it. It is also very likely that these changes will only appear on the pro model, not the regular iPhone 16.
other
Apple continues to improve the audio quality of iPhone speakers, and we expect there will be incremental improvements, but nothing major.
As for haptics, the Taptic Engine (Apple’s haptic feedback technology) has been great on iPhones since they debuted on the iPhone 6s! So don't expect anything new on this front.
Should you upgrade?
So... is iPhone 16 a good upgrade?
The answer to this question depends largely on how much impact artificial intelligence will have on it.Given that artificial intelligence will also become Apple's main focus, the upgrade is likely to bring a new user experience. We'll soon get our first look at Apple's AI capabilities at WWDC on June 10, when Apple will show off its new iOS 18 operating system.

As for hardware, the iPhone 16 isn't a huge upgrade: a faster chip and more RAM won't mean much to most users, because the iPhone 15 is already fast enough. Spatial video will also be a feature that few people care about, at least initially. The battery life has been increased by 6%, and the new operation buttons are actually very popular, but relying on these features to encourage users to upgrade to newer iterations may not be enough.
In addition, the lack of 120hz promotion refresh rate on iPhone 16 may continue to prompt users to switch to the more expensive iPhone 16 Pro.
Everything depends on the AI function of the new iPhone.
