Beijing News: How did director Jian Junjin find you to play the role of Tong Bo in the first place?
David Jiang: I really don’t know why Director Jian came to me, because I give others the impression that I make martial arts movies, or I often play rich people, lawyers, and treacherous people in recent film and television works, but I heard what he said Some of their new directors sat together and often chatted with each other about their respective scripts. After talking about this script, one of the directors said that he might as well try it with David Jiang, so he found me.

David Jiang: After got the script, I felt that I should use facial expressions, body movements, or tone of voice to tell others that I was stupid. At first, I had to pretend to be stupid to Yu Xiangning, who was pretending to be my granddaughter, and after making her believe it and making the audience believe it, the rest of the scene actually followed the script.
Beijing News: You play an old man with dementia, but he is also very awake sometimes. How do you grasp this scale when performing?
David Jiang: I think the most difficult thing about this role is how to play it so that the audience thinks this person is stupid. But the problem is that the character I played is not really stupid, but just pretending to be stupid. After pretending to be stupid, he becomes a normal person, and it is difficult for the audience to know whether I am really stupid or pretending to be stupid.
Beijing News: There is a scene where Brother Shui, played by teacher Hu Feng, passes away in his sleep, and Tong Bo, played by you, is guarding him without any expressions or lines. How did you consider the performance of that scene?
David Jiang: Regarding the scene where Brother Shui left, I was sitting by the bed. In fact, I didn’t need to think about anything at the time. It was just on the surface, but it was actually very complicated inside. Of course I am sad that my good friend is gone. When I was filming, I just tried not to think about it. I just thought about why this bed is so important, more important than people.

Beijing News: The director is a newcomer and this work is his feature film debut through this collaboration. What is your impression of the director?
David Jiang: Director Jian and I only met because of this movie. From the first chat, I felt that he was very familiar with the script. I learned that he had put in a lot of effort over the years, and I began to think that this new director was good. Later, when we started working together, I saw that he was very serious and hard-working, and he was also willing to communicate with the actors. Because everyone knows that there must be discrepancies between the script stage and the on-site shooting of a movie. We all discussed and studied this aspect together. I gave him some opinions, and he gave us some opinions. I think this director has a lot of enthusiasm for movies. .
Beijing News: There are many young actors in the film. Will they be nervous when facing senior actors? How did you communicate with them on set?
David Jiang: I have tried to work with a bunch of new actors many times. Many new actors may not come to chat with me out of respect or embarrassment when they meet me, but I can do the opposite. I take the initiative. Go up and chat with them and get to know each other. I also want to know what movies they have made, whether I have seen them or not. We will even discuss this scene and see if it would be better to do this. Everyone relaxes first, so that communication will be much easier.
Beijing News: In the rainy scene at the end, Tongbo puts his hat on Xiaoqi. It is said that you improvised it. Are there many improvisations that come from this kind of on-site collision?
David Jiang: The scene at the end of was actually shot according to the script. The director shot it in one shot, and we only separated when we had a conversation later. After we filmed it twice, when I looked back, I suddenly felt that Tongbo should do something in this situation, so what should I do? If I think about it in two identities, first, what should a stupid Tongbo do? He would think that she would be miserable if she got caught in the rain and would catch a cold, so he gave her a hat to help her cover the rain. If a sober Tongbo would think that she was being accused in this situation, giving her a hat would not only protect her from the wind and rain, but also symbolically protect her, hoping that she could continue to move forward and do her best. What feels right to her.
Beijing News: It is said that after watching this movie for the first time, you were shocked and couldn't calm down for a long time. Which passage was you most moved by?
David Jiang: I watched the full version of this movie for the first time in Malaysia. Of course, everyone felt that this was a good movie when they just read the script and filming, but after post-production and various effects, I think This movie was more real than the real thing, so I felt very shocked. It took me a while to calm down after watching it.
