China already has 86,000 screens, but the market capacity is still insufficient. Many films cannot make ends meet. The annual attendance rate still has not reached the break-even point. Some excellent films are still not recognized by a wider audience. Through branched distribution and diversified screenings, the "visibility" of more movies can be increased, more theaters can continue to operate, and more audiences can share the fruits of cultural development. In October 2023, I discussed the path of branch distribution with the industry in Hengdian and shared the relevant experiences of various countries. The Chinese film market has its own characteristics. What kind of branch distribution is suitable for the Chinese market requires everyone to cross the river by feeling the stones.
In recent months, market entities have made various attempts. This includes discussions between film studios and theaters on film scheduling ratios, increasing bill sharing ratios, etc. There are successes and there are failures.
