According to the obituary released by the Department of Philosophy of Tsinghua University on January 20, 2024, Professor Hu Weixi of the Department of Philosophy of Tsinghua University died of illness in Beijing at 1:40 a.m. on January 20 at the age of 76.
Professor Hu Weixi was born in Changsha, Hunan Province in 1948 in Wuhan, Hubei Province and grew up in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province. He graduated from the History Department of Nanjing University in 1981 with a master's degree in history. He graduated from the Philosophy Department of Nanjing University in 1986 and received his doctorate in philosophy under the guidance of famous philosophers Sun Shuping and Feng Qi. From 1986 to 1999, he worked at the Institute of Ideology and Culture of Tsinghua University, serving as associate professor and professor. From 1991 to 1995, he served as deputy director of the Institute of Ideology and Culture of Tsinghua University. Since 1999, he has been a professor in the Department of Philosophy, Tsinghua University. In 1995, he served as a senior visiting scholar at Aichi University, Japan, and from 2004 to 2005, he served as a senior visiting professor at Academia Sinica, South Korea.
Professor Hu Weixi has extensive knowledge in both Chinese and Western studies and has written numerous books. He has been engaged in research on modern Chinese philosophy and comparative philosophy between China and the West throughout his life. His monographs include: "Jin Yuelin and Chinese Positivist Epistemology" (1988), "Tradition and Humanities: An Investigation of New Confucianism in Hong Kong and Taiwan" (1992), "Jin Yuelin's Philosophical Thoughts" (1994), "The Choice of Concepts: The 20th Century" "Analysis of Chinese Philosophy and Thought" (2002), "Knowledge, Logic and Value: The Rise of New Realism in China" (2002), "Western Philosophy from the Perspective of Chinese Local Culture" (2002, 2007, 2011 ), "Transforming Knowledge into Wisdom: Tsinghua School and Chinese Philosophy in the 20th Century" (2005), "Story of Time: Philosophical Thoughts of Modern Western Civilization" (2005), "The Intersection between Heaven and Man: Twelve Lectures on Chinese Philosophy" (2005) 2005), "Modern Chinese Thought and Philosophical Tradition" (2009), "The Grace of Life: Happiness and Pain" (2012), "Introduction to Mahogany Philosophy" (2016), "Essays on Ancient Chinese Philosophy" (2018), "The Scholar's World" (2019) and more than 20 books, and is the editor-in-chief and co-author of many books. In addition, "Center and Periphery: Intellectuals and Social Thoughts during the Republic of China" (2017) and the eight-volume "Collected Works of Hu Weixi" were published in Taiwan and South Korea. His posthumous book "Introduction to Spiritual Humanities" will be published by Peking University Press in 2024.
According to the Department of Philosophy of Tsinghua University, Professor Hu Weixi has maintained a free soul and independent spirit throughout his life. He is a pure scholar who is obsessed with academics, a philosopher with original ideas, and a noble, free and honest person. He was aloof and refined when he lived, and calm and serene when he left. He once said: "Life is easy, and death is also easy. When I go back, there will be no wind, rain, or sunshine. Life is like daytime, and death is like night. When I go back, the night wind is calm and the lines are flat."
