New cooperation creates new chemical reactions
In "The Hedgehog", Wang Zhantuan, played by Ge You, is the eldest uncle of Zhou Zheng, played by Wang Junkai. Due to an unexpected encounter in his early years, Wang Zhantuan became what his grandma called a demon and his aunt was worried about. When Zhou Zheng was growing up, his parents always warned him to stay away from the Wang Group. But faced with the choice of life and destiny, two people stuck in life accompany each other and warm each other. From the process of adapting the original novel into a movie, to the actors' interpretations, etc., the creative team co-created and influenced each other, forming a wonderful chemical reaction.
"Hedgehog" is adapted from the short story "Fairy Disease" written by Zheng Zhi, who also served as the screenwriter for the film. This is not the first time that Zheng Zhi's novel has been adapted into a film and television work, but for him, this is the "most special" and the one with the "deepest feelings" for him. The biggest highlight is that the novel originally had a sad undertone, but director Gu Changwei "added a touch of warmth to the story."
When talking about the creative process, Gu Changwei also pointed out that it is important for life that each individual can find a more comfortable position in the environment and find a process that he can enjoy and experience, and it is also important for the characters in the story. Same thing. Therefore, "Hedgehog" actually pays more attention to the value and meaning of personal existence, as well as their choices and the environment they have to face in this choice process.
His previous "Era Trilogy" including the current "Hedgehog" all involved "disease", but he said that he did not want to create a "disease metaphor". The important thing is that everyone is an individual and will follow Other individuals are different, and this difference is precisely the interesting part of life. A series of individuals will connect a wonderful story. These movies essentially focus on the challenges encountered in an individual's life, and how to find a way and a goal to realize the vision of the future.
After thirty years after " Farewell My Concubine ", Ge You and Gu Changwei collaborated again, and their cooperation model has changed. Ge You said: "He was a photographer at that time and I didn't discuss acting with him. This time I have to discuss acting with him because he is the director."
When asked about his feelings about working with Ge You, Wang Junkai said , I was a little nervous before the shooting started, but I quickly got into the mood after joining the group and gained a pleasant and meaningful experience. At the meeting, Wang Junkai called Ge You "Uncle". Recalling Ge You's help to him, he sighed: "The uncle's attitude towards performance is really worth learning from us young actors. He is thinking about it every day and thinking about tomorrow every day." He will also give me a lot of suggestions on how to perform that scene.”
Pure Creative Status
During the meeting, the creative members mentioned one room many times: the 2609 conference room in the hotel. During the filming of the film, members of the film team, including directors, screenwriters, and actors, would come to this room every day to talk about creation and exchange insights on scripts and performances. Using this room as a gathering point, the creative members are immersed in a pure state of creation, constantly delving into and thinking about ways to improve.
When preparing for a scene that required singing on the street, Ge You wore a hat and mask to sing with passers-by in the square in order to get a more realistic experience, but no one even recognized him. In Ge You's impression, Gu Changwei's style is unhurried and unhurried, giving actors a wide space to perform and stronger motivation to perform well. This does not mean that Gu Changwei does not have high requirements for performances, but that he chooses to give actors more freedom to try different performance forms.
In order to make the "stuttering" characteristics of Zhou Zheng's character appear more naturally, Gu Changwei gave Wang Junkai a book introducing different types of stuttering. Wang Junkai also put a lot of effort into this, reading books and watching videos to learn, and considering the characteristics and degree of stuttering in each scene.
It is in this state of serious devotion that the creative team jointly created "Hedgehog", a high-quality film that was shortlisted for the main competition unit of the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival's Golden Goblet Award.
