[cnmo Technology News] Elon Musk explained why he told advertisers to “fuck off” when they stopped advertising on Twitter last year.

Musk was attending and delivering a speech at the Cannes International Advertising Festival in Cannes, France. He had a one-on-one interview with WPP CEO Mark Reed in front of a live audience.

Last year, Musk told advertisers who chose to pull their ads from Twitter (formerly Twitter) in an interview with CNBC, "Fuck you."

Musk has maintained this position for some time, but he explained his remarks earlier today in Cannes: "This is not about advertisers as a whole. It's about respecting free speech, and I think having a global platform for free speech It's important that people with different viewpoints are able to express themselves. In some cases, some advertisers insist on censorship...if we have to decide between censorship and loss, censorship and money, or free speech and loss. Choice, we will choose the latter.”

Last year, Musk blasted advertisers

Musk has been an advocate of free speech for many years, defending his platform and allowing users to post any type of content on x. As long as the content does not threaten others or reveal others' private information. Additionally, there are restrictions on non-consensual nudity.

According to the x terms and conditions page, violent content is allowed on the platform as long as it is appropriately tagged. However, account owners may not be associated with or promote the activities of violent or hateful entities. In addition, x has a zero-tolerance policy against child exploitation and limits on abuse/harassment and hateful conduct.

It is under these circumstances that some advertisers ultimately choose to stop advertising on the platform. Companies including Apple, Sony, General Motors and Disney have all chosen to stop advertising on X, at least for a short period of time.

Musk said that x’s position on free speech is important, which means that free speech takes precedence over advertising revenue, which he believes “is the right moral decision.”
