"Novel often raises questions, but the solution to the problem does not appear in the novel. It is more about letting everyone discover together." Recently, the "Jing'an Forum" hosted by Jing'an District Library and Jing'an District Writers Association was held , writer and vice chairman of Shanghai Writers Association Xue Shu shared the birth of a novel with readers.
What is a novel? Novel is a literary genre that reflects life and expresses thoughts by shaping characters, narrating stories, and describing environments. It is also known as the "four major literary genres" along with prose, poetry, and drama. In Xue Shu's view, good novels are inseparable from the "six powers" - imagination, observation, story, language, emotional expression, and the power of feelings.
Xue Shu began publishing novels in 2002. With his unique perspective and delicate writing style, he created nearly 20 books including the novel "Coming of Age", the novel "The Broken Town", and the non-fiction novel "The Sun Through the Glass". It has won various literary awards and has been translated into many languages. The long-form non-fiction documentary "Life Two Parts" "When My Father Forgot Me: A Secret Farewell" and "Living in a Hospice: The Last Days" published in January this year have attracted widespread attention.
Xue Shu started from the origin of novels at home and abroad, taking the birth process of novels as the main line, and combined with his own rich creative experience, shared his understanding and thinking about novel creation. For example, when it comes to imagination, Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” is a prominent example. “One morning, Gregor Samsa woke up from restless dreams and found that he had been transformed into a giant monster while lying in bed. Beetle." The wild imagination and the absurdity of black humor are impressive.
Is a person's observation skills strong and keen enough? "Those with keen observation skills often notice the changing characteristics of details. He can look for clues from group photos. This is a manifestation of observation ability." For example, Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenni" "Na" said, "Happy families have the same happiness, and unhappy families have their own misfortunes." This is a summary of Tolstoy's powerful observation of the relationship between people.
story ability means that when writing a story, there must be a beginning, a transition, and a transition. The "start" refers to where the story begins. The "continuation" refers to when the character is at the end of his rope. "Storytelling ability is a kind of talent, which can also be improved through acquired practice."
In Xue Shu's eyes, good language is beautiful, clean and accurate. She quoted a saying that writer Wang Anyi often said: "Writing a novel is like knitting a sweater. Language is the texture of the wool. Good language is unique, recognizable, and exquisite." Knitting stitch by stitch is writing a novel. , wool is language, style (bat sleeves, wide sleeves, cuffs) is the structure of the novel, "There is no good language, only structure or plot.
