Beijing News (Reporter Liu Zhen) On the evening of March 8, the new version of "Sunrise" by Beijing People's Art Theater once again appeared on the stage of Cao Yu Theater and will continue to be performed until March 27. This newly interpreted version of "Sunrise" was used as the opening play of the Beijing International Drama Center Cao Yu Theater in 2021. It shows the infinite possibilities of classic works with a youthful cast, a new story interpretation and a stage presentation full of modern aesthetics. After three years of stage polishing, the return of "Sunrise" conveys to the audience the growing stage charm of young actors. The whole play lasts nearly three and a half hours. In order to give the audience a better viewing experience, the play starts on time at 7pm on the performance day.

Different from the traditional narrative structure of "Sunrise", the new version of "Sunrise" begins with Fang Dasheng taking the lead, using "searching" as a clue to interpret the story from his perspective. At the same time, starting from the original script and strengthening the expression of some characters are the innovations of this version of "Sunrise". Whether it is the display of Huang Shengsan's descent into madness or the explanation of the "last straw" that broke Chen Bailu's life in the play, they all represent the creator's unique understanding of this work. "The plot and characters of "Sunrise" are contemporary, and if performed well, the audience can gain high-quality empathy." Director Feng Yuanzheng said that giving the characters in the play the emotions of current people highlights the communication between the work and the current audience. This is the creative goal of this version of "Sunrise". Stage images such as swimming goldfish, flowing water droplets, and breathing light and shadow walls allow the audience to find a modern flavor that travels through time and space in the traditional story.

After the first three rounds of performances, the new version of "Sunrise" won praise from the audience. The perfect combination of old scripts and new forms, the modern visual experience brought by the stage design, and the actors' lines and body skills all allowed the audience to see the excellence of this work from different angles. "Clear and powerful lines coupled with clever body movements accurately convey full emotion and even plot development." "Whether it is a man or a woman, let them say something, leaving some unfinished 'meaning' and extraneous meaning." The 'sound' of sound, the words Chen Bailu wanted to say but didn't say, those struggles and silence, all disappeared at sunrise." Many viewers left messages backstage, saying that they were pleasantly surprised after watching it, and that they had the intention to "watch it again". Drama critics more affirmed the practical significance of the work. Song Baozhen, director of the Drama Research Institute of the China Academy of Arts, said: "The new version of "Sunrise" does not deliberately represent the reality of the 1930s. It even neutralizes the appearance of the stage and detaches the plot from the specific time and space. Come out so that today’s audience can empathize and must face the situation of the characters in the play, and even find the correspondence with their own soul, situation and destiny in the scenes of the characters’ fate.”

As the play has been staged for many rounds, the young actors in the play have also experienced more role experience on the drama stage, which has made their grasp of the roles deeper and richer this year. Director Feng Yuanzheng said that all actors have significantly improved in this round of performances. "From the beginning, I created passionately according to the director's requirements. Later, I became more and more able to think and examine the characters on my own, and find a way of expression. This is a gratifying thing for young people." Entering a new round of creation , the director also put forward new requirements for the actors. In addition to rereading the script before rehearsal to rediscover and explore the deep meaning of the classic play, the director also required to "really listen, truly see, and truly feel" during the rehearsal process. , conveying the profound thoughts of the work to the audience on the stage.
