"Jingle Bells" and "I Have My Wonderfulness"... At the special concert, 18 special students brought 5 songs Ensemble and 7 solo pieces.
On the stage, teachers sit among the students, or gently tap the rhythm on the children's shoulders or legs, or slide their fingers on the music score at a constant speed and point out the notes to be played, helping students who cannot hear the sound to master the rhythm. .

This special band is called the "Star Dream" Wind Band. It was founded in 2017. Most of its members are students with moderate to severe hearing impairment, and there are also children with autism, so it is also called the "Deaf Student Wind Band" ". They play 7 instruments including trumpet, trombone, French horn, flute, clarinet, saxophone, and percussion, and together form a standard simplified wind orchestra.
This performance is the band’s first special performance since its establishment. Chen Xufei, the leader of the wind band, said that three years ago, they came up with the idea of holding a concert, hoping to provide students with an opportunity to show themselves and improve their self-confidence.

How can I learn music if I can’t hear the sound? The birth of the
orchestra actually originated from a charity performance performed by the Xiamen Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra to a special education school.
After the performance, the children saw various brass instruments and gathered around them. Chen Shayin, the principal of Xiamen Special Education School, saw the curiosity and enthusiasm in the children's eyes and asked the orchestra: Can the children be taught musical instruments? One dared to mention it and the other dared to teach it. Chen Shayin said, "I didn't expect that they agreed."
“We were simply thinking, can these special children have the opportunity to learn musical instruments like ordinary children?” Zhang Hengzhi, the leader of the Dunshan Orchestra, recalled the feeling of “depression” at the beginning of teaching. Because most of the children are deaf, the campus is very quiet. In addition, the arrival of unfamiliar faces also made several autistic children scream and cry.
In this way, musicians from the Dunshan Orchestra serve as instructors, giving free lessons to these special children every week and providing musical instruments. At the same time, the special education school will send a sign language teacher to assist with translation.
Teachers start by teaching children to recognize staffs, and gradually open up their silent world.

Hearing-impaired children almost always feel music with their hands and identify notes through vibrations. Teachers will ask children to put their hands on the teacher's belly to feel the breath when the teacher plays, and then touch the instrument to feel the resulting vibration. They can feel the music through touch and know how to control the breath. Sometimes, teachers also use mobile phone audio software to help children confirm whether the notes played are correct.
After years of training and running-in, now, with just one movement and look from the teacher, the children can understand the intention and complete the performance with mutual cooperation.

This wind band was once questioned: For this group of children, music is the vibration frequency brought by the instrument. Does this make sense? To this, the teachers of the special education school and the wind band all gave a positive answer.
Chen Shayin said that the original intention was to make children happier, more confident and more equal, and the successful holding of this special concert was an unexpected gain. Chen Xufei also witnessed the growth of the children. "They became completely different. When they walked, their heads were raised high and their eyes were full of light."
