At the beginning of 2023, some European countries announced that they would provide assistance to Ukraine with main battle tanks and other weapons, of which Germany provided 18 " Leopard 2 tank.
However, according to the German "Der Spiegel" report, Sebastian Schaefer recently stated that most of the "Leopard" 2 tanks provided by Germany are damaged and difficult to repair. "What we have to admit is that as the conflict escalates, only a very small number of Leopard 2 tanks delivered to Ukraine are currently available for use," Schaefer said.
Schaefer recently visited a tank maintenance factory in Lithuania with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. He said that there is currently a lack of basic parts for tank maintenance and the maintenance progress is very slow. Schaefer also said that the attempted repairs by Ukrainian technicians caused more serious damage to the tank. "We need to provide better training and guidance to Ukrainian technical personnel."
According to a previous report by Der Spiegel, despite a serious shortage of tanks, Ukraine had previously refused to receive 10 "Leopard" 1 tanks aided by Germany, saying that these tanks could no longer meet the needs of the front line and maintenance was also a problem.
