"Yellow River Cantata" was written by Guang Weiran, an outstanding alumnus of Central China Normal University, modern poet and literary critic, and the music was composed by People's Musician Xian Xinghai. Guang Weiran, whose original name was Zhang Guangnian, was born in Guanghua County, Hubei Province. He joined the Communist Youth League in 1927 and became an official member of the Communist Party of China in 1929. In 1931, he was admitted to the Chinese Department of China University (one of the predecessors of Central China Normal University). In February 1939, Guang Weiran completed the poem "Yellow River Cantata" in five days; at the end of March, Xian Xinghai completed the entire score in six days.
