At nearly 23:00 on February 18, Renmin University of China issued an obituary:

Excellent member of the Communist Party of China, outstanding educator, famous economist, former president of Renmin University of China, main founder of the financial discipline of New China, and the Finance and Economics Committee of the Eighth National People's Congress Member, convener of Economics of the 3rd Discipline Appraisal Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, convener of Applied Economics of the 4th Discipline Appraisal Group, consultant of the Social Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, honorary president of the China Society for Finance and Banking, honorary director of the School Affairs Committee of Renmin University of China Comrade Huang Da , honorary first-class professor, died in Beijing at 8:10 on February 18, 2023, at the age of 98.

At noon on the 18th, Yu Guoming, director of the Academic Committee of the School of Journalism and Communication of Beijing Normal University, announced that Huang Da, a famous economist in my country and the founder of China’s financial discipline, passed away at the age of 98 that morning. The end of an era in finance". The

reporter learned that Huang Da was born in Tianjin, the former president of Renmin University of China, who has written many classic financial textbooks. He also said, "The financial world is vast and deep, and it is fun to see the victories and reveal the secrets."

Public information shows that Huang Da, born in Tianjin in 1925, studied at North China United University, an honorary first-class professor and doctoral supervisor of Renmin University of China. Since 1983, he has been the vice president of Renmin University of China. In 1988, he was the first dean of the School of Economics of Renmin University of China. From November 1991 to June 1994, he was the president of Renmin University of China. He used to be the honorary director of the School Affairs Committee of Renmin University of China, the chairman of the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Expert Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Education, the honorary chairman of the China Society for Finance and Banking, and the vice chairman of the China Enterprise Confederation. On June 1, 2011, he won the first China Financial Discipline Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2013 won the "China Economic Theory Innovation Award", and in 2014 won the third Wu Yuzhang Humanities and Social Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award.

Most of Huang Da’s energy was basically devoted to teaching and research. Even after he assumed administrative positions such as vice president and president of Renmin University of China shortly after the reform and opening up, he did not stop teaching work until the 1980s and 1990s. In the 1900s, he always regarded not leaving the front line of teaching as the criterion he must abide by.

Compared with many scholars who "work as much as their body", Huang Da once claimed that "only four textbooks are left"-"Socialist Fiscal and Financial Issues" in the early 1980s, "Introduction to Comprehensive Balance of Fiscal Credit" in the mid-1980s, "Money and Banking" in the 1990s and "Finance" in the early 21st century.

After the reform and opening up, in terms of textbook compilation, there was a view that the West already had very good money and banking textbooks, and there was no need to compile China's own textbooks. Huang Da insisted that in the Chinese forum, in front of Chinese students, when teaching money and banking, it must be combined with China's reality. He believes that the translated textbooks are written by foreign professors with a foreign background and are not completely suitable for Chinese students. If only foreign textbooks are used, there will be a phenomenon that students learn in their own country but do not understand the national conditions.

In 2010, Huang Da published "Sixty Years of Relationship with Money and Banking". According to an article published by the China Economic Times, Huang Da said, "With this as a conclusion, due to the irresistible reason of age, I have not been able to think further about money and banking and finance for several years." However, , in a speech titled "Money and Banking Learns Finance" by Huang Da, he said, "The financial world is vast and deep, and it is fun to see the secrets." At the same time, he recorded the historical background and process of the discussion and research on my country's economic and financial issues after the founding of New China, especially after the reform and opening up. From this perspective, Huang Da's academic experience is undoubtedly a milestone.
