Turkey's parliament on Thursday approved a draconian pre-election law that could jail journalists and social media users for up to three years for spreading "fake news".

AFP reports that the new rules cement the government's firm control over the media eight months before the election, the president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is trailing in the polls. The
European Commission said the measure's vague definition of "disinformation" and the accompanying threat of jail time could have a " chilling effect and increased self-censorship, especially given the upcoming elections in June 2023".
The bill consists of 40 amendments, each requiring a separate vote - introduced by Erdogan's Islamist AK Party and strongly opposed by Turkey's main opposition group.
