A 70-year-old smoker in Nantou, who has a pack of cigarettes a day and has been smoking for more than 30 years. Recently, he started talking and coughing frequently, and he could not even speak completely. After climbing up the stairs, I was panting and out of breath. After the doctor's diagnosis, it was found to be "pulmonary obstruction" (COPD)!

Director Shi Zhihong of the Department of Thoracic Medicine, Nantou Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, said that lung obstruction is a respiratory obstructive disease caused by chronic respiratory tract inflammation. It was previously called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is mainly caused by smoking, environmentally harmful substances (such as dust, air pollution, and harmful smoke). The symptoms of coughing and stuck sputum are similar to those of a common cold and are easily overlooked. Therefore, many patients usually wait until an acute attack (such as breathing difficulties) to see a doctor before being diagnosed with lung obstruction.

Lung obstruction can be diagnosed early and get appropriate treatment to reduce the frequency of acute attacks and the occurrence of complications. Because smokers are a high-risk group, which may promote rapid deterioration of their condition, recommends that people over 40 years old who have long-term smokers who experience cough, sputum and wheezing symptoms for more than 2 months should seek medical attention as soon as possible to arrange lung function tests.
