Taipei Dangdai's new digital plan: it is not an art fair to replace

In the past three short weeks, Taipei Contemporary decided to cooperate with the art platform Ocula to launch a new digital plan to provide an online art fair service for the 99 galleries participating this year. This online exhibition is free to all participating galleries. Online platform technical support provided by Ocula. The online expo will be held from May 2nd to 5th, and the VIP preview will be April 30th and May 1st.

completed the conversion from offline to online Taipei Contemporary in such a short period of time. There are many strategic considerations in this, but the organizer said: it is not an art fair to replace, but the promotion before the fair. Work and hope to continue to promote Taiwan’s contact with the outside world.

Artron Art Network and Art Toutiao APP Special Online Art Fair opened, in conversation with Taipei Contemporary Co-Director Robin Peckham, and talked about their thoughts on holding a new digital plan. As a platform provider, Ocula also shared with us its experience in online display.

Yue Hongfei (Robin Peckham)

Artron Art Network X Taipei Contemporary Co-Director Yue Hongfei (Robin Peckham) Artron Art Network: Taipei Contemporary is fortunate to be the only art fair held offline in the first half of this year. According to many gallery reactions , The response was good this year. From the perspective of Taipei Contemporary in 2020, what was your original prediction of the market? Yue Hongfei: We actually had a lot of worries when held this year's Taipei Contemporary. One is that many Mainland gallery exhibitors and collectors may not be able to successfully apply for visas; the second is that the Spring Festival is approaching in time, which usually only happens once every four years. The time of Taipei Contemporary is generally three weeks before the Spring Festival. This year happens to be a relatively special year. The time it takes place is only one week away from the Spring Festival, so it may affect the schedule of many people. The third is the overall economic situation. not optimistic. But fortunately, the results this time exceeded our expectations. In particular, collectors from Taiwan are very active. This also strengthened our confidence: to continue to promote artistic exchanges between Taiwan and the outside world.

Artron: Is this a starting point for your online art fair? Yue Hongfei: is indeed like this. We have already held an art fair this year, and there is no pressure to make an alternative art fair. In fact, what we have always emphasized is: Dangdai is not only a trading platform, but more importantly, it is a platform that connects multiple parties. We hope to continue this exchange activity outside of Art Week. Although the effect of online meetings cannot be compared with offline direct meetings, we want to use this moment to rethink how to connect galleries and collectors to tide over the difficulties together. The current epidemic of

is the direct cause. Many art fairs have launched online platforms. We also hope to provide our exhibitors with more platforms and opportunities through online art fairs. I just read a piece of news a few days ago. Dominique Lévy, a well-known art dealer and gallery owner, stated that art sales at galleries have dropped by about 90%. I'm not sure if this is true, but now galleries really need an updated platform to get sales opportunities.

Artron Art Network: Current What is the participation situation and specific arrangements? Yue Hongfei: At , we have sent out invitations to all participating galleries this year, and basically received responses from all galleries. Everyone is very willing to participateIt was displayed online, and we found that many galleries brought very good works. For example, Taiwan Geng Gallery brought contemporary paintings and calligraphy works by Yao Ruizhong; White Cube Gallery brought famous "geometric" works of Al Held, the leader of the American post-war "hard-edged painting movement"; Eva Presenhuber Bringing the famous American artist Doug Aitken's work "I'm Coming Back Soon..." and so on. Other galleries will exhibit exhibitions they canceled in the spring. I believe it will provide collectors with many choices.

There is another thing worth mentioning this time: We will launch a series of online activities, including me and our co-founders Ren Tianjin will hold a dialogue at the opening; after the official opening to the public on May 2, there will be a series of live tour and dialogues by gallerists and artists; visits to virtual studios of Taiwanese artists, etc. I hope this brand new digital plan becomes an online carnival.

Artron: In response to the current situation so quickly, what are the current investments in technology, capital, and personnel? Yue Hongfei: preparations for online art fairs are indeed much faster than preparations for offline art fairs. An offline art fair may take several months or even half a year. But our online art fair was completed in the past three weeks. We send out invitations to all participating galleries; Ocula provides platform and technical support. Although the workload is huge, the joint efforts of the two teams eventually contributed to this matter. Artron: What are your sales expectations for online exhibitions? What do you think is its main function and value?

Yue Hongfei: has different ways of displaying online and offline, so it is impossible to display online and offline works that are huge and eye-catching. But it can still bring many small but still wonderful works.

For us, preparing for this online art fair is not to be a sales event, but to encourage galleries to continue to communicate with VIPs. This is what we have always emphasized. Taiwan is known as the "ghost island". No matter how good artists, galleries, and collectors are, it is difficult for them to be recognized by the world. Therefore, the core value of Taipei Contemporary is to continuously increase the interaction between the world and Taipei. This online art fair is not called "Online Art Fair", but "Taipei Connections". What it wants to replace is not an art fair, but the promotion work before the fair.

Artron: What will the investment in the online exhibition hall look like in the future? What is the strategy for the overall online and offline development of the Expo? Yue Hongfei: This time the epidemic has made us all have a strong awareness, that is, what are the emergency response measures when encountering an emergency? So for us, exploring online development will become a continuous project in the future. I think online, like offline, will gradually become an irreplaceable part of the Expo.
