"Dear parents: how are you
? I have received the last letter, don’t miss... the old comrades in the army care about me very much, and now my living habits...I have not completed rice transplanting recently?...
Good health and safe production.
Ke Wenxian Barracks on May 14, 1957"
This is a letter from the 18-year-old Ke Wenxian to his parents two months after his enlistment. After just 20 days, Ke Wenxian died in the coastal defense struggle. Because the family was illiterate, living in poverty, and the transportation conditions were not developed, the trip to the army to pick up Ke Wenxian was never made. This has become a long-term regret for the family.
62 years later, when his nephew Ke Yuandong saw this letter, he would post a daze for a while. This letter and the notice sent by the Civil Affairs Section of the Putian County People's Committee at that time were preserved in plastic, but Ke Yuandong's desire to find his uncle's burial site never stopped. Where was the uncle buried after he died? Can finding the uncle's burial place be done in my own generation?
The letter
sent home by Ke Wenxian appeared on August 1, 2019, the Army Day.
At around ten o'clock this morning, Ke Yuandong was in the small shop at home. Because business was not busy, he had to "swipe his phone and read the news on today's headlines." Suddenly, a
martyrs certificate
In March 1957, Ke Wenxian entered the army as he wished. The whole family was happy for him and high hopes for him. However, no one expected that hope would soon turn into despair-Ke Wenxian died unfortunately in June 1957.
A few months later, the Ke family learned of the bad news. Sadness enveloped the family, lingering. Every year on Ching Ming Festival, family members can only offer incense to worship in front of Ke Wenxian's tablet.
According to the customs of his hometown, Ke Yuandong adopted it to Ke Wenxian after he got married at the age of 24. "We all know that it is in Xiamen, but no one knows where it is," Ke Yuandong said with excitement. "Thank you for telling us this news. If you are a son, you must go and see it. This will give you an explanation for your grandfather and elders."
