"Complete Works of Master Sheng Yan"-Chapter One Walking to the water poor, sitting and watching the clouds rise

Shengyan Master Quotations:

If you are in hope, you can generate vitality; if you are in despair, you can easily survive. At any time, hope is a must.

When water is poor, there is no way. From the perspective of common sense, the end of mountains and rivers means the end, but in the eyes of Zen people, "action" is the place where the end comes to life. "Yunqi" is a blurred vision, everything is gone, and the scenery is no longer. It should be a departure from the original intention of the traveler, but if the mind is free, sitting and watching the cloud is just the process of understanding the taste of natural change.

What does "poor water" mean? When climbing up the stream, the stream disappeared at the end. One possibility is that this place is the birthplace of the mountain spring, hidden under the surface; the other is that the stream water collected after rain has dried up here. The climber walked, and when the water was gone, he simply sat down and saw clouds rising from the top of the mountain. It turns out that the sky is on the water, and it becomes a cloud, and the cloud can become rain again. Then there will be water in the mountain stream. Why despair?

Being at the source of water, seeing everything return to the source, and exhausting the world's dust, can we return to the truth and the source of our "self". Yunqi is a natural phenomenon. You don't need to care about it or be harsh. The external blindness does not harm the light of the heart. The heart is not moving, and the clouds are as comfortable as the clouds.

People will have their own feelings and experiences about everything. Buddha is born from the heart; demons are also born from the heart; happiness and pain, kindness and ugliness are also born from the heart.

A person's mentality largely determines his feelings, so at the beginning of the lecture, he asked the Buddha how to subdue his heart and reach the state of enlightenment.

Most people think of changing the world, but very few people think of changing their hearts. In fact, as long as you change your mentality, you can change your world.

When a Zen master was traveling, he stayed overnight at an old woman's house. For several days, the old woman kept crying. The Zen master was very strange, so he asked: "Old donor, why are you crying all day? Is there anything sad, can you tell me?" The old woman said sadly: "I have two daughters, and the eldest daughter sells For cloth shoes, the younger daughter sells umbrellas.

When the weather is fine, I think that the younger daughter’s umbrellas will not be sold, so I can’t help but feel sad; but when it rains, I think of the eldest daughter again. Cloth shoes must not sell well, so I shed tears when I think about it." Zen master

smiled and said, "It turns out that this is the case! Old donor, you are wrong to think that way!" Zen master

then enlightened the old woman and said: " It’s not wrong for you to worry about your daughters, but why don’t you change your mindset? Think about it, when it’s sunny, your eldest daughter’s cloth shoe store must be a prosperous business; when it rains, your little daughter sells umbrellas It must be very popular. You should be happy every day!" After listening to Zen Master's words, the old woman suddenly became clear. From then on, whenever she thinks of her two daughters, whether it is sunny or rainy, she is always happy. Hehe.

Change a perspective, and life will change accordingly. The opposite of pain is happiness, the opposite of crying is a smile, and the opposite of pessimism is optimism. As long as you change your mindset, everything will become beautiful and lovely.

At the station where the crowds are coming and going, hurriedly catching up with an old man about to leave the platform, accidentally dropped a shoe. And the train has started to depart slowly. The people around looked at the beautiful leather shoe on the old man's feet and felt sorry for him. Unexpectedly, the old man immediately threw the second shoe out of the window, everyone was surprised. The old man smiled and explained, "No matter how beautiful this shoe is, it is useless to me. But if anyone can pick up a pair of shoes, maybe they can still wear it! When he puts on these beautiful shoes At the time, he should be happy. And I got rid of the distress of only one shoe, and I should also be happy."

was originally an unhappy thing, but there are different ways to deal with it, and these methods will bring us Different mentality. In life, we must always consider what we want to do and how we should manage our happy life instead of suffering. The same is true in the realm of life. In the course of life, whether it is dealing with love, career, knowledge, etc., you go forward courageously, and then you find that it is a dead end, and you can’t go on.Falling mood will inevitably appear. At this time, you might as well look to the side or look back, maybe there is another way to go elsewhere; even if there is no way to go, look to the sky! Although the body is in desperation, the mind can still travel in space, enjoy nature at ease and happily, experience the broad and far-reaching realm of life, and never feel like a dead end.

The process from poor water to cloud rising to rain is just like a person encounters great difficulties in the process of spiritual practice. Some are physical obstacles, some are psychological obstacles, and some are environmental obstacles. If you retreat because of this, you must return your thoughts to the point of view of the first mind. When I first developed my mind, I didn’t have anything, and I didn’t understand the methods and concepts of practice. If you look back at the situation at the time and then look at the present, haven’t you already come a long way? So don't be disappointed, don't give up. This situation may also happen at every stage of life. If you look at life with a mentality, you will find a way to survive everywhere.

One experience in a day:

Sometimes, the situation cannot be chosen, but the mood can be chosen. In the face of adversity, I regard suffering as a kind of enjoyment. I can see the beauty of flowers blooming in the wilderness, and I can still smile in the face of pain. So the mortal world, the pain and suffering, all turned into dust and smoke in this brilliant smile.
