"My personal experience along the way is that reading and education is the best way to succeed in life. I often quote a saying-"Small but easy to learn, like the sunrise of the sun; strong and easy to learn, like the light in the day." ; Old and eager to learn, like a bright candle, our whole life should be spent in learning, even in a difficult situation, we must continue to seek progress and development."

-Chen Mingjin

40 years ago At that time, Dr. Chen Mingjin left his hometown and came to Macau. At that time, he had no longevity, only his loneliness and longing for a new life. In order to take root in Macau, he went to sell coolies, lived in wooden houses, worked as a hawker, and went to Singapore to work as a laborer. While gradually improving his living conditions, the past poor days also sharpened his temperament. , Let him become tough and self-reliant. He climbed step by step and built his own business.

Coming from the difficult years, Dr. Mingjin Chen has gained more understanding and experience of the sufferings of the grassroots. This has also become the origin of his idea of devoting himself to public welfare and dedicating to the people. In the past few decades, he has actively devoted himself to charity and has made contributions in the fields of education, science and technology, medical care, and health. In 2005, he became a member of the Legislative Council of the Macau Special Administrative Region. In the life of the city, in the streets and lanes, his sense of service took root.

Reading dreams fill the gaps

Bo: First of all, congratulations on being awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Évora, Portugal in April 2019. Can you share your feelings and feelings at that time?

Chen: I am able to receive this award, thank you Évora University for affirming and encouraging me. In the past, my family conditions were relatively poor, so I never entered a university campus to study. This has been a pity in my heart for many years. Now that I have received this honorary doctorate title, it fills part of my shortcomings.

In this world, around us, there are some celebrities with low education and high achievement. They are called "social champions". Most of their knowledge comes from the streets or movies. They have to "repair credits" in social colleges. , I grow up while groping, and the hardships and efforts I put in are often difficult for people without personal experience to understandof. It took me thirty years to stand on this awarding platform, and it took far more time than the students at school, but I am still very lucky and I am grateful for it. Once again, I would like to thank my colleagues at Évora University for their recognition and support. I will take this as an encouragement and continue to do my job well.

z37 zBo: What kind of values do you hope to convey to young people through your own experience? Or, what kind of example do you want to set for the younger generation?

Chen: My personal experience along the way is that reading and education is the best way to succeed in life. I often quote a saying-"Small but easy to learn, like the sun of sunrise; strong and easy to learn, like the light in the sun; old and easy to learn, like the light of candles", our whole life should be spent in learning, even if In a difficult situation, we must constantly strive for progress and development. My long-term donation to school and devoted to education is precisely to create better conditions for young people, so that they can develop the habit of diligent academic study and improve their lives through study. I also hope that they can serve and contribute to the society after they have achieved success in their studies.

Charity and charity work. The beneficiaries

Bo: You have been doing charity activities for many years and have contributed your strength in many fields. What kind of philosophy has supported you for years of selfless dedication and devotion?

Chen: In the early 1980s, the mainland had just begun to implement reform and opening up. My brother and I came to Macau in pursuit of a more ideal life. At that time, our family was struggling, but in order to fulfill our brother's choice, my mother still gave us 200 yuan. This 200 yuan is the starting point for all our stories in Macau. In order to take root here, we have sold coolies, worked as hawkers, and worked as laborers in Singapore. In short, we have tasted all kinds of pain and bitterness along the way. But because of this, I have seen the difficulties of many poor people in their lives. This makes me deeply feel that there is still a group of people in this society. They need help from this society, they need more people to support, a small help. For them it may be a little courage in life. I have experienced that kind of suffering myself, so when I have the ability, I am determined to help them. What they think and hope is the motivation for me to do these things.

bo: What did you do when you first entered the service field?

Chen: I started serving as the coordinating minister of a township association more than 30 years ago. This is my starting point. No matter what problems the villagers and residents encounter in work, family and social affairs, I will come forward to coordinate and solve them, and I have money to pay and I can contribute. This experience has exercised my service ability to a large extent, and also enhanced my understanding of service work. I hope I can do more service work, so in 2005 I ran for the legislative council of Macau. . Relying on the experience accumulated in the previous service work and the support of public opinion, I was finally elected with high votes for three consecutive years, and also broke the historical record of the general election in Macau. This is something I am very proud of.

Bo: You have been awarded an honorary doctorate this time. Will you put more effort into education in the future to support and promote?

Chen: In fact, as early as the 90s, when my life basically reached the level of food and clothing, I started donating to school. In 1996, I donated to build two Hope Primary Schools in Shanghang County and Yongding County, Longyan, Fujian. In the eight years until 2003, I donated a total of 18 Hope Primary Schools. When my financial ability improved a little bit, I began to invest in running schools. In 2009, I co-founded Quanzhou Vocational College of Light Industry; in 2010, he took over the City University of Macau; in 2013, inheriting the educational thoughts of Mr. Liang Piyun, a famous Chinese educator, I began to serve as the chairman of Liming Vocational University. In the future, City University of Macau looks forward to all-round cooperation with Évora University, especially in scientific research.I hope that the two universities can rely on the established heritage science joint laboratory, the joint research and development project of intelligent health for the elderly, and the joint scientific research project of Sino-Portuguese intelligent translation to jointly promote the joint running of graduate courses and the in-depth exchange of students.

Public servants of the people Serve for the people

Bo: How do you understand the work of councillors?

Chen: The work of councillors must go to the people and think about what they think; they must look at the overall situation and worry about the people's worries; they must go deep into the grassroots and have fun with the people. This is a job that serves people, so "people" are the end of all jobs, and we must find ways to improve their happiness in life.

Bo: You are involved in a lot of fields, the affairs are complicated, and the service is something that requires a lot of effort to do, how do you guarantee the effect of your service?

Chen: I have many public positions, including a member of the Australian National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Macao Executive Council. In order to better carry out our work, we have established a more systematic social service system such as "One Member's Office, Seven Member Service Offices", the People's Association for Building Australia, the Chen Mingjin Support Association, the Chen Mingjin Foundation, and the Chen Mingjin Love Supermarket to better listen The voices of the citizens, go to the grassroots.

bo: What achievements have you achieved in the work of parliamentarians in these years?

Chen: According to incomplete statistics, during my 12 years as a member of Parliament, I have received more than 24,000 complaints for help. This seems to be just a number, but when it comes to reality, there are countless stories and sweat. I feel very happy to be able to truly help people in need. Gifts of roses, hand a fragrance. In my opinion, social service work has only a starting point and no end. I believe that with my enthusiasm, love, care, and sincerity, in exchange for others' satisfaction, peace of mind, joy and peace of mind, I will always be happy and happy myself.

Looking forward and looking forward for the country

Bo: As a member of the Australian National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a former member of the Macau Legislative Council, you can see the development of this society and the country from a broader perspective. So what do you think of the "Belt and Road" initiative and the development prospects of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area?

Chen: "One Belt One Road", as a global development initiative proposed by my country, has been widely recognized in the world. Its strong vitality lies in cooperation and win-win. Although the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area does not have the scale of the "Belt and Road" , But the same is true. We should promote the construction of major infrastructures such as land transportation and ports in major central cities along the route to form a more convenient and smooth network, and enhance interconnection and practical and efficient cooperation.

▲On March 11, 2015, the Fourth Plenary Session of the Twelfth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference was held. Mr. Chen Mingjin, Member of the Legislative Council of the Macao Special Administrative Region and Member of the Executive Council, gave a speech entitled "Leveraging Macao's Advantages to Promote Cross-Strait Development"

Bo: The promotion of these policies has brought Macao to a new crossroads. How do you think Macao should be grasped? Live this opportunity?

Chen: Based on a unique historical origin, withAnd China’s need to implement the “One Belt One Road” initiative, Macau can exist as a “China-Portuguese business cooperation service platform” and a “multicultural coexistence exchange and cooperation base”. This is an irreplaceable advantage of Macau. I have been a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference for 16 years. In 2018, I was honored to serve as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau in Macau. These identities will encourage me to continue to advise and advise at the national level and strengthen our exchanges and friendly exchanges with Portuguese-speaking countries.
