Ford's shared electric scooter company Spin opens international market, first stop in Cologne, Germany

Ford’s electric scooter company Spin recently announced that it will open up the international market. The first stop will be launched in Cologne, Germany this spring, and will be opened in other German cities later. In addition, Spin also plans to apply for an electric scooter license in France next month and explore the feasibility of this business covering the UK market.

In recent years, Germany has become a popular market for micro-transports. As of December 2019, 7 companies in 37 German cities have competed for the market. Currently in Cologne, Spin will compete with companies such as Bird, Lime and Circ.

Spin’s existing shared scooters are mainly based on Segway’s scooters, but the company plans to launch its first customized scooters later this year. Spin started with a shared bicycle and was sold to Ford in November 2018 for $100 million. Before the deal was concluded, Spin raised $8 million externally.
