Question: In addition to making movies, you are also a novelist. Do you prefer novels or movies to express?
Wanma Caidan: Maybe you have a misunderstanding. At first I wrote novels, so everyone thought my movies were adapted from my own novels, but in fact they were not. Many of my movies are original scripts. There is a contrast between my novels and movies, both in style and content. Making movies is not the same as writing novels. It is subject to many restrictions in reality and material conditions. It is a restricted creation. This is one of the reasons why my novel is different from the movie.
Question: In recent years, these three movies have very different styles. Are you pursuing deliberate changes and breakthroughs?
Wanma Caidan: There are no rules in my film creation. Looking back on my novels, I can see the trajectory and changes of creation, but the film is too restricted by the external material conditions, and it is difficult to see the rules in my films. The script of "Balloon" was finished before "Bumped and killed a sheep." Inspired by the fact that I saw a red balloon floating on Zhongguancun Street in Beijing, I combined this imagery with Tibetan themes, so that the movie ended. Later, I slowly wrote a movie script, but never found the opportunity to shoot. For me, the chance of making a movie is full of uncertainty.
Question: In the ending subtitles, thanks to Director Wong Kar Wai, what kind of help did he provide?
Wanma Caidan: He has not directly participated. He has read the script, and more of it is help with some resources, including investment and main creation. The main creations such as the sound guidance of "Balloon" are all from the production of "Bumped to Death" produced by Wang Jiawei A Sheep's resources at that time.
