Photography is about walking, or photography itself is a walk. The journey of photography is full of opportunities. In 2023, I walked through one news scene after another and had countless "accidental" encounters. Someone happened to come to my coordinate point, I pressed the shutter, and then I had a moment.
In this year, the UK did not experience the ups and downs of the turning points of the times as many times as in 2022, but more returned to daily life. This year in Britain, it’s a porridge and a meal, a little British girl is overjoyed to buy a lion on a thread, a Chinese martial arts class for British primary school students, a group of simple and low-key Liverpudlians who love dragon boating, and a person in life and in the workplace. A soft and strong woman... I took the most ordinary lens and picked up the most daily touches.
Many moments are captured by chance like lightning, but they also seem destined and natural. Perhaps it is too fantasy to explore the relationship between chance and necessity. The two are dialectical and cause and effect each other. Some may seem like coincidences, but they are actually accumulated over time; some may seem inevitable, but they are often unintentional. Only by not being ignorant of cause and effect can we achieve liberation. I think we just need to return to the essence of photography, start from the heart, and find pictures that fit my mood in ordinary daily life to express myself.

A British man and his dragon boat story
On the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival, the editorial department planned the topic of "Dragon Boats Going to Sea". I sent nearly a hundred emails to find British dragon boat people with Chinese stories, but nothing came to fruition. There are not many dragon boat clubs in the UK, but they are basically all local learners. After many inquiries, I found this low-key and simple old man - David Bangs by chance. David is in his 50s, speaks very little, and his face is full of stories. In 1988, he participated in his first dragon boat race in Fujian Province, China. "That experience gave me a new understanding of the wonders of dragon boat racing. Since then, I have devoted myself to it, hoping to make our boat faster than the Chinese team." After returning to Liverpool, England, he founded amathus Dragon Boat club.

In mid-June, I went to cover the Manchester All-British Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, and David was also going to compete. When I first met him on the side of the game canal, he was whispering encouragement to a visually impaired teammate. At first he was unwilling to be interviewed. This simple and low-key old British man told me that he just wanted to row the dragon boat well. I told him that filming his story would allow more British people to understand this great and wonderful sport and join it, and he finally agreed.There were only a few days left before the Dragon Boat Festival, and David's club only trained at the Liverpool docks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which meant I only had one chance to shoot on Tuesday night.
Two days after returning to London, I set off for Liverpool and started the "Special Forces" interview mode: the club training started at six o'clock in the evening. I booked a train from London at two o'clock in the afternoon. The round trip took six hours. After shooting, It was already half past twelve in the morning when we got back to London.
The whole interview process was very pleasant. They invited me to sit in the drummer position of the dragon boat and sail into the canal with them. At eight o'clock in the evening on a British summer day, two dragon boats rowed side by side across the beautiful Mersey River in the golden sunset. People are serious and focused during training, laugh heartily after training, care about each other, and encourage each other. As a Chinese, I can't help but feel moved: Can you imagine that this ancient water sport that originated in our country is being promoted and promoted by a group of passionate British people on the other side of the distant ocean. When they were together with the dragon boat, their faces were filled with light and their hearts were filled with love, just like the water surface shining brightly under the sun.
"Dragon boating is the best sport in the world." David said, "Dragon boat racing is about working hard with friends and dedicating yourself to the race. No matter you win or lose, you will always be together and enjoy this emotion. This is what dragon boat racing means to me." I decided to give it a try and when I got to the train station the train was really late! I jumped on the train and for the first time wanted to thank this "habit" of delays. It was already past three in the morning when I got home, sorted out the photos and finished publishing. Although physically and mentally exhausted, this was a very unforgettable interview experience - the clues I got by chance, the light I got by chance, the smile I got by chance, the brilliance of humanity I got by chance. This encounter gave us simple and warm images of a group of people, making the British summer night infinitely beautiful.

Sports photography is inevitable by accident
In April this year, I received an email from the International Sports Press Association (ais). My Wimbledon photos won the aips annual group photo outstanding work award, and I was also lucky enough to be listed as the aips global annual award. "top ten" photojournalist. Since it was not the finals, I could try as many shooting positions as possible. Before the final match point, I climbed to the highest point of the stands. Every night when the competition ends, I finish posting the article at two or three in the morning. However, walking and marathon races often start at seven in the morning, so I have to get up at five. Some nights I only slept an hour. Colleagues would joke after finishing their work at night, saying "see you later" instead of saying "see you tomorrow".
However, it was this devilish schedule that allowed me to get the beautiful sunrise light beside the Danube River. The early morning sun is gentle, and the shadows of the contestants' slim and toned bodies are projected on the ground. Under the light and shadow, the beautiful rhythm is a precious gift from God to the photographer. It is worth sleeping for only one hour. In the walking race, the light and shadow blended with the athletes' slim figures; in the marathon, I climbed to a high point to integrate the athletes' toned figures with this beautiful Danube city. Water, cities, buildings, clouds, sky, boats, and running girls form a beautiful and shining picture.

Thanks to my colleagues for their help, my shooting location was in front of Buckingham Palace, facing the boulevard, which was the best location to shoot the coronation procession. Based on my experience in shooting the Queen’s funeral last year, I thought that after shooting the coronation procession, I could turn around and take photos of the balcony. A friend reminded me that a demonstration in support of Palestine would break out over the weekend, and all traffic would be suspended, so I should not go out. Ten years ago, I flew from Beijing to Israel for vacation, and came to this land "flowing with milk and honey" that I had longed for for many years.
