I was at the scene, recording the moment and making it history.

Starting in 2019, we have launched the "I was at the scene" column, which uses the precious interview experience of Xinhua News Agency reporters to "sink their hearts, bend down, and integrate into their emotions" to tell what they saw and heard at the scene of major news events. , what you think.

In 2023, they will practice the "Four Forces", from key projects of the "Belt and Road" to in-depth research along the Yangtze River, Yellow River, and the Great Wall; from the scene of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to entering an African country that has just experienced a coup; from the Arctic Circle From the key projects of the "Polar Silk Road" to the hot infrastructure projects in the Greater Bay Area; from the launch and recovery of the Shenzhou spacecraft to the development and operation and maintenance of the "China Sky Eye"; from the severe flooding in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to the Jishishan earthquake-stricken areas Life rescue; from the international competition venues of the World Championships, Asian Games, and Universiade to local events such as "Village Super" and "Village Ba"; from the father and son who have protected the martyrs for more than half a century to providing free door-to-door education for disabled children The rural teacher and his daughter...

They solidified the moment of news and recorded history.

Starting from January 1, 2024, the "I was there" column will successively broadcast the masterpieces of many Xinhua News Agency photographers in 2023 and the stories behind the photos. I hope their works and stories can bring you hope and strength.

Photography is about walking, or photography itself is a walk. The journey of photography is full of opportunities. In 2023, I walked through one news scene after another and had countless "accidental" encounters. Someone happened to come to my coordinate point, I pressed the shutter, and then I had a moment.

In this year, the UK did not experience the ups and downs of the turning points of the times as many times as in 2022, but more returned to daily life. This year in Britain, it’s a porridge and a meal, a little British girl is overjoyed to buy a lion on a thread, a Chinese martial arts class for British primary school students, a group of simple and low-key Liverpudlians who love dragon boating, and a person in life and in the workplace. A soft and strong woman... I took the most ordinary lens and picked up the most daily touches.

Many moments are captured by chance like lightning, but they also seem destined and natural. Perhaps it is too fantasy to explore the relationship between chance and necessity. The two are dialectical and cause and effect each other. Some may seem like coincidences, but they are actually accumulated over time; some may seem inevitable, but they are often unintentional. Only by not being ignorant of cause and effect can we achieve liberation. I think we just need to return to the essence of photography, start from the heart, and find pictures that fit my mood in ordinary daily life to express myself.

Perhaps, all the people and stories we take pictures of are taking pictures of ourselves.

A British man and his dragon boat story

On the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival, the editorial department planned the topic of "Dragon Boats Going to Sea". I sent nearly a hundred emails to find British dragon boat people with Chinese stories, but nothing came to fruition. There are not many dragon boat clubs in the UK, but they are basically all local learners. After many inquiries, I found this low-key and simple old man - David Bangs by chance. David is in his 50s, speaks very little, and his face is full of stories. In 1988, he participated in his first dragon boat race in Fujian Province, China. "That experience gave me a new understanding of the wonders of dragon boat racing. Since then, I have devoted myself to it, hoping to make our boat faster than the Chinese team." After returning to Liverpool, England, he founded amathus Dragon Boat club.

↑On June 18, David Bangs (middle) and other athletes from the amathus Dragon Boat Club participated in the 2023 All-British Chinese Dragon Boat Festival Professional Group Competition in Salford, England.

In mid-June, I went to cover the Manchester All-British Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, and David was also going to compete. When I first met him on the side of the game canal, he was whispering encouragement to a visually impaired teammate. At first he was unwilling to be interviewed. This simple and low-key old British man told me that he just wanted to row the dragon boat well. I told him that filming his story would allow more British people to understand this great and wonderful sport and join it, and he finally agreed. There were only a few days left before the Dragon Boat Festival, and David's club only trained at the Liverpool docks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which meant I only had one chance to shoot on Tuesday night.

Two days after returning to London, I set off for Liverpool and started the "Special Forces" interview mode: the club training started at six o'clock in the evening. I booked a train from London at two o'clock in the afternoon. The round trip took six hours. After shooting, It was already half past twelve in the morning when we got back to London.

The whole interview process was very pleasant. They invited me to sit in the drummer position of the dragon boat and sail into the canal with them. At eight o'clock in the evening on a British summer day, two dragon boats rowed side by side across the beautiful Mersey River in the golden sunset. People are serious and focused during training, laugh heartily after training, care about each other, and encourage each other. As a Chinese, I can't help but feel moved: Can you imagine that this ancient water sport that originated in our country is being promoted and promoted by a group of passionate British people on the other side of the distant ocean. When they were together with the dragon boat, their faces were filled with light and their hearts were filled with love, just like the water surface shining brightly under the sun.

"Dragon boating is the best sport in the world." David said, "Dragon boat racing is about working hard with friends and dedicating yourself to the race. No matter you win or lose, you will always be together and enjoy this emotion. This is what dragon boat racing means to me." When I asked them about thirty When asked whether local "improvements" have been made to this sport over the years, he shook his head: "Never. We follow a very strict traditional Chinese dragon boat training method."

The two-hour special shooting was too short. At the end, I found that it was already very long. It was hard to catch the last train back to London. But from my experience of taking trains in the UK many times, I know that the latest train is most likely to be delayed. I decided to give it a try and when I got to the train station the train was really late! I jumped on the train and for the first time wanted to thank this "habit" of delays. It was already past three in the morning when I got home, sorted out the photos and finished publishing. Although physically and mentally exhausted, this was a very unforgettable interview experience - the clues I got by chance, the light I got by chance, the smile I got by chance, the brilliance of humanity I got by chance. This encounter gave us simple and warm images of a group of people, making the British summer night infinitely beautiful.

Sports photography is inevitable by accident

In April this year, I received an email from the International Sports Press Association (ais). My Wimbledon photos won the aips annual group photo outstanding work award, and I was also lucky enough to be listed as the aips global annual award. "top ten" photojournalist. It felt so wonderful to see my name alongside my favorite photographer like Ezra Shaw, an American photographer from Getty Images. In the subsequent intercontinental competition, I won the first place in the Asian group photo. The chairman of the International Sports Press Association sent me a letter of thanks and a certificate. What I want to thank myself is the platform of Xinhua News Agency, which allows me to reach the forefront of the world's top competitions and compete with photographers from several major news agencies.

has been working in the industry for nearly twenty years. One of the reasons why I am obsessed with sports photography is that sports photography, like competitive sports, is full of chance and unknown. In competitive sports, you never know the result of the game until the last moment; in sports photography, you never know what kind of moments you can get until the last minute. It is always full of surprises and always exciting. In sports photography, “luck” or “chance” cannot be overemphasized. But behind the little luck gained by chance is accumulated experience over time, and thoughts and insights about human nature and life.

html In March, I came to Birmingham to shoot the All England Badminton Open. On the day of the semi-finals, I filmed seven games in total, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. In the last match between Chinese player Li Shifeng and Danish player Antonsen, many reporters left and there were only a few photographers left in the field. Since it was not the finals, I could try as many shooting positions as possible. Before the final match point, I climbed to the highest point of the stands. Li Shifeng finally narrowly defeated his opponent in the final after 95 minutes of hard work. After the last ball landed, the taciturn Li Shifeng took off his jersey, threw it hard, and hugged the coach on the sidelines. At many sporting events, the celebration often ends there. But no one expected that he unexpectedly ran back to the court and suddenly did a beautiful side flip! The audience roared with surprise and joy. Fortunately, my shutter never stopped. "Take one more second" is always my principle when shooting sports celebrations, because you don't know what kind of celebrations will follow. If you stop shooting when you think it's over, you will miss the potentially more exciting moments later. .

Just like that, I "accidentally got" four consecutive pictures of side flips. Due to the high climb, the background of the photo is clean and the racket is lying in the corner of the frame.

↑On August 20, American player Davis Woodhall competed in the women's long jump final of the World Athletics Championships.

The intensive schedule of the World Athletics Championships is a huge physical challenge for photographers and can be called a "devil's training camp". Every night when the competition ends, I finish posting the article at two or three in the morning. However, walking and marathon races often start at seven in the morning, so I have to get up at five. Some nights I only slept an hour. Colleagues would joke after finishing their work at night, saying "see you later" instead of saying "see you tomorrow".

However, it was this devilish schedule that allowed me to get the beautiful sunrise light beside the Danube River. The early morning sun is gentle, and the shadows of the contestants' slim and toned bodies are projected on the ground. Under the light and shadow, the beautiful rhythm is a precious gift from God to the photographer. It is worth sleeping for only one hour. In the walking race, the light and shadow blended with the athletes' slim figures; in the marathon, I climbed to a high point to integrate the athletes' toned figures with this beautiful Danube city. Water, cities, buildings, clouds, sky, boats, and running girls form a beautiful and shining picture.

↑On August 20, athletes competed in the women’s 20-kilometer race walking final of the World Athletics Championships.

During the 35-kilometer race walking competition, I was in charge of the finishing position. I waited until the last runner crossed the line in a temperature of over 40 degrees, but unexpectedly received a proposal from a pair of Slovak runners. Slovak male race walker Dominik Cerny waited at the finish line after finishing his race. After Slovak female race walker Hana Brzalova crossed the finish line, he knelt down on one knee and proposed to her. For many people, the road to proposal may be long and winding, but for these two Slovak athletes, the journey was exactly 35 kilometers. The beautiful Heroes' Square and sweet kisses have become the ultimate romance on the field. Although the two athletes did not win any medals in their respective race walking events, they will both go home with one of the more meaningful souvenirs in their lives.

html Late one night in April, Chinese boxer Zhang Zhilei made a passionate attack in London. In the sixth round, he technically knocked down the British star Joyce, thus winning the WBO heavyweight interim boxing championship gold belt. I was supposed to be filming next to the boxing ring, but because the place was too full, I was temporarily placed in the auditorium, and was blocked by the heads of the audience in front. At first I had given up any hope of filming, but suddenly I unexpectedly found an audience waving the Chinese flag in front of me. An expected picture emerged in my mind, and I quickly found an angle that could capture the national flag and Zhang Zhilei in the same frame. When the game was over, with the national flag as the foreground, I captured the moment of Zhang Zhilei's passionate celebration.

Compared to the photos next to the ring, I prefer this chance moment.

This year's Wimbledon is my second time shooting this competition, but I am still willing to treat myself as a trainee and try different shooting angles and methods. The feeling of going home

In 2023, the fragrance of Chinese quintessence spreads across England. From the Spring Festival to the Mid-Autumn Festival, from official large-scale exhibitions to the classrooms of British primary school students, China's oriental charm shines in this Western country with the same profound accumulation. Chinese cultural performances are warmly welcomed wherever they go. The two ancient countries learned from each other in cultural feasts and collided with dazzling sparks.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, the UK is "igniting" a strong Chinese New Year atmosphere, and the excitement is not inferior to that in China. The temperature in London that day was below freezing, but the city center was bustling with people. In Trafalgar Square, thousands of British people and tourists gathered together, and various annual activities were staged one after another. Walking here with my camera on my back, I feel as if I have returned to my childhood and experience the beauty of going home during the New Year.

The coronation of the British king. A heavy rain. I occasionally got a copy of

html. On May 6, British King Charles III finally ushered in his coronation. The coronation of the new king is a major event of the century. Many British people braved the rain to watch the coronation procession. The early morning in London in May was still cold and chilly. My video colleagues and I set out at around 5 a.m., arriving five hours early. In addition, we stood in the rain for seven hours during the filming. We didn’t get home until after 8 p.m. after finishing the draft. My child had been infected with norovirus the day before, and I felt top-heavy while filming. I even doubted whether I could continue to stand in the rain.

From last year to this year, I completed on-site shooting of historical events one after another in the rain. Heavy rain and light rain are never absent from important news scenes in the UK. I have become accustomed to treating working in the rain as a kind of training for myself.

Thanks to my colleagues for their help, my shooting location was in front of Buckingham Palace, facing the boulevard, which was the best location to shoot the coronation procession. Behind me is another important shooting spot - facing the balcony of Buckingham Palace, used to shoot the royal family members waving to the people from the balcony after the coronation procession. Based on my experience in shooting the Queen’s funeral last year, I thought that after shooting the coronation procession, I could turn around and take photos of the balcony. Unexpectedly, this year the two shooting locations were separated by a temporary high wooden board. In other words, you can’t shoot the balcony to shoot the coronation parade, and you can’t shoot the balcony to shoot the parade. You can only choose one of the two. When

came on stage five hours early, I started thinking about the board. There are official personnel guarding each site, and they are not allowed to wander around each other. Finally, I found a small corner next to the wooden board at the bottom of the stairs where people can barely stand. And along the gap, I can take pictures of the Buckingham Palace balcony opposite. I was so ecstatic about this discovery that I shivered in the rain while thinking about how to quickly occupy this position after the coronation procession. As soon as the king and queen passed by me in a golden carriage, I immediately picked up the 400mm lens and stood at this location, followed closely by an AFP reporter - and sure enough, I was not the only one to discover this!

Thanks to this opportunity, I took into account the coronation procession and the royal family members waving from the balcony. The next day, the British newspaper The Guardian published my photo. A few days later, the branch marketing manager told me that my photo of the royal family waving on the balcony was sold for a high price of US$2,600 during the agency sales process, making it the most expensive photo sold by agencies in the UK.

Women’s body language is also worth exploring by photographers. I believe that many photos pursue emotional expression, but emotions are more than just facial expressions. Sometimes they are silent, but they can express your heart vividly. Body language is also a kind of emotion. There is no need to deliberately arrange some tension, and it has nothing to do with composition or fancy techniques. Women's limbs are just like this, both soft and full of power.

Speaking of photography, I once thought that the photography industry might be more suitable for women, just like nurses and teachers. Photography "speaks" in a delicate way, often an emotional expression. Photos need to express emotion, and that’s what women are good at. At the same time, women are better at discovering beauty and have a keener intuition about beauty.

Fireworks and strikes

The way Britain enters 2023 is with bright fireworks and nationwide strikes. At that time, I would be confused by the contradictions in this country: on one side, there are beautiful fireworks blooming as if the years are peaceful, and on the other side, there are parades roaring like mountains and tsunamis, as if the building is about to collapse.

On New Year's Eve, I borrowed the video reporter's tripod and came to the Thames River four hours in advance as required. I waited for the New Year countdown in the biting cold wind and prayed for a better 2023 amidst the dazzling fireworks.

↑In the early morning of January 1, fireworks bloomed over the London Eye in London, England.

However, no matter how beautiful the fireworks are, they only last for a moment. Strikes, strikes, strikes are going on all over the UK at the same time... Train drivers' strike, bus drivers' strike, postal couriers' strike, medical staff's strike, teachers' strike, civil servants' strike, border management strike ... Doctors are done with the railways, railways are done with the subways, and subways are done with nurses.

remembers that at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, hundreds of hospital beds were moved to the center of the stadium, "nurses" were busy working hard, and doctors formed the three letters "nhs (National Health Service)" and danced gracefully. Amid the cheers and applause of the audience, the UK showed the world that they are proud of their free medical care for all. In the UK, the NHS is a symbol of strength, and "universal free medical care" is considered to be the same contribution to the world as the Industrial Revolution, Shakespeare and Harry Potter. However, now that the cost of living crisis and inflation in the UK are rising, NHS medical staff can no longer stand it.

On a cold morning in London, I went to St. Thomas' Hospital opposite the Houses of Parliament to photograph the NHS strike. I photographed the SOS slogans in the hands of medical staff and Big Ben together, which seemed to explain today's Britain - no longer a ship. The artillery is powerful, leaving only the wind and rain.

The temperature of human nature

In November, London entered the cold winter time. A friend reminded me that a demonstration in support of Palestine would break out over the weekend, and all traffic would be suspended, so I should not go out. As a result, I told her: Not only did I go, but I also walked all the way, carrying equipment from the city center to the US Embassy in Battersea. Unexpectedly, 500,000 more people came to the London demonstration in support of Palestine than expected, and the number of people marching reached 800,000, demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. The parade assembly area was packed with people. The speaker read out the names of the children killed in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in a low voice, and many people burst into tears. I was squeezed into the crowd and photographed these real emotions from every gap.

↑On November 11, a boy participated in a rally in support of Palestine.

Ten years ago, I flew from Beijing to Israel for vacation, and came to this land "flowing with milk and honey" that I had longed for for many years. I still remember that day in Jerusalem, when I entered Palestine through a narrow market entrance and passed through a long corridor. On the high Palestinian-Israeli separation wall, graffiti with the words "love wins" is bright and eye-catching. Today, the expectation is still there, and I wish you peace.

The next day is the official activity day to commemorate the armistice of World War I, calling on people to cherish peace. Against the background of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I dragged my legs, which were almost useless the day before, to the outside of Westminster Abbey and stopped in front of the poppy crosses. In this dispute, maybe all I can do is take some photos.

Photographer Bresson said: "In photography, the smallest things can become great subjects." In 2023, most of the objects I photograph are ordinary. As a recorder, I tell myself that with love in my heart and warmth in my hands, the works I take with my camera can touch people's hearts. As Lin Yutang said: "I sincerely believe that a humble and small life that can live a happy life is the most beautiful thing in the universe."

moment is the freeze-frame of the photographer's spirituality.Fate has another name, timing. But whether it is fate or opportunity, it is not an accident that comes to you on its own initiative, but countless choices made with eager hope. In the news scene, when the daily accumulation is given by the years, when the courageous persistence becomes meaningful, opportunities become chances and opportunities, and there is a natural thing that comes naturally.

"Beyond the thousandth choice, there is also the thousand and one possibility. There is a window waiting for me to open, and then light will shine through."
