Tonight (6th), "All the Way" will be broadcast on Dragon TV. The theme of this program is "Homeland". Hu Ge, Liu Tao and Chen Long came to Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park to follow scientific researchers into the hinterland of the rainforest, understand the important role of the rainforest ecosystem, and visit the lives of local people after "ecological relocation" situation.
Why are rainforest ecosystems so important?
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is located in the middle of Hainan Island, accounting for one-eighth of Hainan Island’s land area. With a forest coverage rate of 95.56%, it is a treasure house of biodiversity. In this episode, three environmental activists came to the Parrot's Mouth Management Station in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, followed scientific researchers into the depths of the rainforest, and participated in sample field surveys and data collection. Before entering the tropical rainforest, environmental activists learned about rainforest-related knowledge through the popularization of science by professionals, which can be said to have done enough homework. But unexpectedly, as soon as they set off, they encountered a big "test" - the ubiquitous leeches tried to "set up camp" on the environmental activists' shoes and pants.
arrived at the national second-level protected plant growth area, and scientific researchers from the Hainan Academy of Forestry Science began to construct sample plots. With the protected plant "Hainan Red Bean" as the core, they conducted a 20-meter by 20-meter sample plot survey and carbon storage measurement. They investigated the tree species, name, tree height, and diameter at breast height of each tree in the sample plot...from the tree to the tree. All plants at all levels, from shrubs to herbs, must be covered and surveyed. This is undoubtedly a tedious and extremely challenging task, and three environmental activists need to participate in the entire process and assist scientific researchers in completing the survey. How will they behave when they are exposed to this kind of work for the first time? After witnessing the daily work of scientific researchers, what would the three environmental activists think? Can such a detailed investigation in a tropical rainforest intuitively reveal the important role of the rainforest ecosystem?
How are people doing after the ecological relocation?
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park was established in 2021. 470 households and 1,885 people in 11 natural villages in the rainforest were ecologically relocated to make way for nature. People returned space to the rainforest and gave up their homes to nature. In the process of protecting the tropical rainforest in Hainan, many local people made way for nature, put down their machetes for the rainforest home, and changed from loggers to forest rangers. Fu Jinrong is one of them. He used to be a logger. Fu Jinrong told environmental activists that in the past, due to the lack of corresponding protection policies, everyone could enter and exit the tropical rainforest at will. The current national second-level protected plants were all protected at the time. It was the subject of massive felling. From "lumberjacks" to "foresters", what kind of ideological changes have the national park rangers experienced?
Under the leadership of local people, three environmental activists went to the old village site in the rainforest to observe on the spot the changes in the rainforest ecology caused by ecological relocation. Later, environmental activists came to the relocated Gaofeng New Village. They put on local traditional clothes, tasted local specialties, and had in-depth discussions with the villagers to understand their living conditions after the ecological relocation. What conflicts and struggles did the villagers experience when they had to move away from their former homes in order to protect the rainforest?
