Anchovy is also called tube fish, commonly known as wheat straw diao. It belongs to the same family as carp and has very similar scale colors. It was once widely distributed in the Yangtze River and the rivers and lakes south of it. In the early 1970s, the annual catch of anchovy and other migratory fishes reached 260,000 tons. By 2010, the catch had dropped to less than 100,000 tons. In the "Red List of Vertebrate Animals in China" revised in 2016, the protection level of the catfish has been upgraded to critically endangered, and it is a key protected aquatic wild animal in Hunan Province.
