自從經歷過好萊塢的#MeToo事件後，除了讓曾受性侵傷害的女性勇敢站出來外，也喚醒了人們面對影視業中男女比重失衡的問題，不少女性於影視業中的待遇和薪酬都不平等，就連得獎機會也比男性少。其實影視界有不少傑出的女性工作者，而今次為了進一步宣揚女性在電影界的努力，就邀請了來自84個國家的368位專家，其中男女比例各占接近一半，共同票選出761部電影，然後再進行評分排列出「女性導演最佳百大電影」。
今次女性導演最佳百大電影的排行榜中，有不少都是耳熟能詳的女性導演，包括首位女性奧斯卡最佳導演得主Kathryn Bigelow、《Lost in Translation》的Sofia Coppola、《The Matrix》的跨性別女性導演組合Lana and Lilly Wachowski和近年《Lady Bird》的Greta Gerwig。另外，於今年逝世的法國導演Agnès Varda也有不少上榜作品。
其實要做到男女平等第一步就是學懂撇開標籤，雖然這次也特別把「女導演」標籤出來，無形間把女性於導演這個職業中規限出來，但相信隨着時代過去，電影業男女比例能進一步得到平衡，女性終能跟男性並齊。
