The Israeli military recently announced that they conducted an amphibious special forces raid on the coast of the northern Lebanese town of Batroun and successfully captured a senior agent allegedly affiliated with Hezbollah.
According to Israeli military officials, the operation was carried out by members of the elite Shayetet 13 unit. They quietly landed on Batroun Beach at dawn, quickly located the target and arrested him, before taking him back to Israeli territory. The detained agents are currently under detailed investigation by Unit 504, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) intelligence unit.
shayetet Unit 13 is known as Israel’s maritime elite, and its combat capabilities and tactical levels are sometimes compared to the United States’ Navy SEALs. The unit conducts daily training at the Atlit naval base on Israel's northern Mediterranean coast and is responsible for conducting strategic sabotage activities across enemy lines, including destroying important facilities and enemy seaports during wartime.
Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (nna) reported on Saturday that witnesses witnessed "an unidentified army conducting a landing operation on Batroun Beach" at dawn the previous day. According to nna, the force "heavily armed and quickly moved to a cabin near the beach, where they kidnapped citizen Imad Amhaz, took him to the beach, and then fled to the high seas on a speedboat."
The Lebanese government has expressed great concern about this, and its security department is conducting an in-depth investigation into "an incident that occurred in the Batroun area" at dawn on Friday.
Hezbollah issued a statement condemning "Zionist aggression in the Batroun region" but did not provide further specific details.
Israeli military officials emphasized that the operation was necessary to protect the security of the country and its citizens, and said that the military will continue to take action when necessary to deal with potential threats.
It is worth noting that more than a month before the raid, Hezbollah had claimed that its target was a naval base on the Mediterranean coast of northern Israel, which is home to the elite Israeli naval commando unit Shayetet 13. Hezbollah claimed to have launched the attack on September 23, but the Israel Defense Forces did not confirm at the time that the naval base had been targeted, saying only that "no casualties were reported."
