In 1952, Shi Weijian graduated from the training school and became one of the first batch of young actors trained by the Shanghai People's Art Theater and began his stage career.
In 1956, Shi Weijian was transferred to the Central Experimental Theater and received guidance from director Sun Weishi and some senior artists. He played major roles in dramas such as "One Servant, Two Masters", "The Peach Blossom Fan" and "The Long River of Fen", and was well received by the audience.
Shi Weijian's most well-known role is the male protagonist "Luo Qun" in the famous director Xie Jin's film "The Legend of Tianyun Mountain". This is also his first collaboration with Xie Jin.
In 1981, "The Legend of Tianyun Mountain" was released, and the audience was deeply moved by the story. The film tells the story of Luo Qun, an intellectual who was labeled as a rightist in 1957, and his fiancée Song Wei left him. Song Wei's classmate Feng Qinglan started a family with him in times of crisis, and the two of them helped each other to tide over the difficulties together.

In 1983, he collaborated with Xie Jin again in the movie "Qiu Jin", playing Sun Yat-sen in the film.
