Wu Tianyi, the "pioneer" of my country's plateau medical cause: Take root in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and be the guardian of life on dangerous peaks

CCTV News: On the roof of the world, an elderly man in his 80s led a medical team to trek on the celestial road closest to the blue sky and white clouds. He is the "climber" who conquered the peak, the "pioneer" of my country's plateau medical cause, and the winner of the " July 1st Medal " and a moving Chinese figure. He is Wu Tianyi , academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

has been a doctor for one year, and academician Wu Tianyi has practiced the original aspiration and mission of a Communist Party member with sincere feelings for the people. His name is deeply imprinted in the hearts of people of all ethnic groups in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Academician Wu Tianyi, 87 years old, is still carrying a cardiac pacemaker and multiple injuries in the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, leading a team to promote national scientific research projects on plateau medicine.

In 1951, he returned from the battlefield to resist US aggression and aid Korea and was admitted to China Medical University. In 1958, Wu Tianyi and his wife responded to the call of the Party Central Committee and came to Qinghai to support the construction of the Great Northwest. At that time, altitude sickness was still a blank in the field of medical research in my country. Many inland builders who had just arrived in Qinghai suffered from altitude sickness but delayed treatment and even sacrificed their lives.

Wu Tianyi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: (at that time) as a young doctor, I was responsible. One is determined to walk a lifetime. That is, I want to engage in plateau medical research and protect the health of plateau people.

In 1978, Wu Tianyi and his colleagues co-founded the country's first plateau medical research institute. In order to fully grasp all kinds of acute and chronic altitude sickness as soon as possible, from 1979 to 1992, Wu Tianyi presided over a large-scale investigation of altitude sickness that lasted more than 10 years and covered 100,000 people. Years of running around on plateaus and long-term experimental work have caused Wu Tianyi to encounter many difficulties. 14 bones in his body were broken, his right ear tympanic membrane was ruptured four times before and after, and both eyes suffered from severe cataracts under the stimulation of strong ultraviolet rays. The original intention has not changed.

Wu Tianyi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: Which place is high in altitude, which place is relatively remote or the most remote, I will go there, and why? Only there, obtaining information is of the most scientific value.

Academician Wu Tianyi's quantitative diagnostic criteria for chronic mountain sickness was adopted by the International Association of Alpine Medicine as the international standard and named "Qinghai Standard", which was uniformly applied internationally in 2005. He pioneered the research on "Tibetan Adaptive Physiology", and he has diagnosed and treated tens of thousands of Tibetan people. During the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, he presided over the formulation of a series of altitude sickness prevention and treatment measures and first aid plans, creating a world medical miracle in which 140,000 laborers worked in areas above 4,000 meters above sea level for 4 years without a single death due to acute altitude sickness, Known as the "protector of life".

Wu Tianyi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: With the support of the country, I will definitely be able to make achievements. In the future, we should also do scientific research and actual medical work to improve the health of plateau populations and improve the quality of life.
