National Taiwan University develops new LED lights to treat oral cancer

In addition to saving electricity, LED lights can also treat oral cancer. Taiwan has a population of more than 1.3 million people who chew betel nuts and is prone to oral cancer. National Taiwan University's research found that the use of photodynamic therapy to treat precancerous lesions such as oral erythema and oral verrucous can achieve a good response in an average of three to four times and the lesions disappear completely.

A 60-year-old man developed red and white spots on the right oral mucosa and became bigger and bigger. Finally, the red and white spots appeared outside the corner of the mouth. The irregular meat ball that looked like a ball of table tennis was quite scary. He accepted NTU's light power. After 22 treatments before and after treatment, the lesions became smaller and almost disappeared. Jiang Junbin, director of the Department of Dentistry, National Taiwan University, pointed out that the incidence and mortality of oral cancer accounted for the fourth place among male cancers in Taiwan. 80% of oral cancer deaths are related to chewing betel nuts. If you drink too much alcohol, you have a higher risk of cancer and survive five years. The rate is only about 50%.

The youngest oral cancer patient he has ever received is only 17 years old. This patient started smoking, drinking, and chewing betel nut in junior high school. He went to see a doctor because of his uncomfortable mouth. He was diagnosed with the second stage of oral cancer and received continuous treatment after surgical resection.

Oral leukoplakia, oral leukoplakia and oral verrucous hyperplasia are the first three lesions of cavity cancer. Jiang Junbin said that if the oral precancerous lesions can be diagnosed and treated at the stage, it can prevent the deterioration of oral cancer.

Jiang Junbin said that photodynamic therapy can be used as the first-line therapy for oral verrucous hyperplasia and oral leukoplakia lesions; as for oral leukoplakia lesions, because the stratum corneum is too thick, it will block light exposure and affect the curative effect. Photodynamic therapy has limited therapeutic effects. Airbrush cryotherapy can effectively treat oral leukoplakia lesions, and a complete response can be obtained in an average of 3.1 times.

National Taiwan University research found that LED red light treatment of oral precancerous lesions such as oral hyperplasia, oral erythema and white spot lesions, has a good effect, and the cure rate is nearly 100%.
