As advertised, Musk appears to be abandoning this strategy.

Tesla has announced the hiring of Olympic shooter Kim Ye-ji, whose performance at this summer's Paris Olympics attracted the attention of netizens, as the automaker's brand ambassador in South Korea.

kim said of her new partnership with Tesla:

I am very happy to be working with Tesla and that they recognize me. I hope to send a positive message with Tesla.

Here are some of the photos she posted following her new partnership with Tesla:

Kim's agency said her relationship with Tesla began when Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted Tweets about her amazing performance at the Olympics:

Kim Ye-ji’s relationship with Tesla developed after Elon Musk mentioned her. Kim Ye-ji is Tesla Korea's first brand ambassador, the company said.

She is not only Tesla Korea’s first image ambassador, but also Tesla’s first well-known paid celebrity ambassador in the world.

This policy change isn't entirely surprising, as Musk's policy of not paying celebrities to endorse Tesla products is generally associated with the automaker's strategy of not advertising.

Musk even said that he hates advertising, and Tesla started advertising last year.

This change in strategy coincidentally occurred after Musk acquired Twitter, an advertising-reliant company, and Tesla even began advertising on Twitter (now called x).

Tesla’s sales in South Korea are not amazing, but the country’s auto market favors domestic brands. The American automaker is doing quite well as a foreign brand, with model y becoming South Korea's best-selling imported car in the first half of 2024.

But in reality, the number is just over 10,000 units.
